Time for another film review, this time it's the turn of The Sweetest Thing, starring Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair.
-- Plot. -- The film is about 3 flatmates - Christina, Courtney and Jane. To help Jane get over her latest dating disaster, the girls go out to a club one night where Christina meets the man of her dreams. Christina is a playa, a love-hater, she likes to play games with men and never looks for Mr Right, she's only after Mr Right Now. Peter, the object of her affections, gives her the number of the hotel he's staying at, but, thrown by the fact she actually likes him, by the time Christina works up the courage to call him, he's already checked out. She does, however, have one more piece of information about him - his brother is getting married on Saturday in Somerset, a 3 hour drive away. After obsessing for a few days, Courtney makes the decision for her, and the two girls go on a road trip to find this wedding and tell Peter how she feels about him. Their journey turns somewhat disasterous when Courtney floods the mens bathroom they are forced to use, and the girls have to spend the rest of the journey in their underwear - on laundry day, no less! Upon arrival in Somerset they visit the only dress shop within 20 miles and end up dressed in florescent pink and blue outfits, they then arrive late for the wedding and literally 'fall' into the church, only to be greeted by
a nasty shock - it's not Peter's brother that's getting married - it's Peter himself! Christina returns home disheartened, but the story doesn't end there. What she doesn't know is that Peter and his bride have decided not to get married after all. Three weeks later. Courtney has a man of her own, and Christina is starting to question her own dating rules and has been reading the 'Ten Commandments Of Love' book that she usually despises. Back in Somerset, Peter is about to leave town for good when he comes across Christina's address on the mailing list of the dress shop they visited. The girls arrive home after a night out on the tiles to discover Peter asleep on their doorstep, but he gets nervous, stutters his way through an explanation and leaves. Christina lets him get away, but quickly resolves not to be afraid of taking a chance on love anymore, but now she has to find Peter again...
-- Extra Stuff. -- Year: 2002. Time Running: 90 Minutes. Cert: 15. Directed by Roger Kumble, also responsible for Cruel Intentions 1 & 2.
DVD Details: I'm reviewing the TV version, but the DVD apparantly contains: - Audio commentary by director Roger Kumble and cast - "Politically Erect" - A behind the scences look at The Sweetest Thing - "A Day in the Life of Nancy Pimental" (The writer.) - Storyboard comparisons - Deleted scenes
Cast: Christina Walters - Cameron Diaz. (Charlies Angels, Gangs of New York.) Courtney Rockcliffe - Christina Applegate. (Married With Children, Just Visiting.) Jane Burns - Selma Blair. (Legally Blonde, Cruel Intentions.) Peter Donohue - Thomas Jane. (Dreamcatcher, Deep Blue Sea.) Roger Donohue - Jason Bateman. (Starsky & Hutch 2004, Little House On The Prarie.)
-- My Opinion. -- Yes, it's another one of my favourites. There are some good girlie moments, and some laugh out loud funny moments - namely the guy in the golf cart that Peter and his brother always aim to hit, Gramps, the little boy in the church, Peter's non-wedding reception, and the guy on the motorbike. Among many others, of course.
Did you know Christina Applegate's real-life husband has a cameo? He plays the guy she pulls at the bar in the beginning of the film, the "So whats up with you?" guy. The three female leads have a good chemistry between them, they obviously got on really well in real life and that comes across in the film. Cameron Diaz does a good job playing Christina, complete with bad hair extensions, as proved in the end credits when she holding half of them in her hand! She plays the type of woman you love to hate - she can have any man she chooses but she just plays games with them, but you do end up feeling sympathy for her as well.
One of the reasons I like this movie is that the plotline is slightly more original than most(emphasis on the word 'slightly'!) That is to say, at least it's normally the guy who crosses state and country to get the girl. The plot is also far-fetched, however. I mean, would you drive for three hours to turn up at the wedding of the brother of some guy you spoke to for five minutes in a bar? The major plothole worth mentioning is are the three girl flatmates or not? They seem to live together in one apartment when it suits the storyline, but at other times they have their own places, and Christina regularly refers to it as 'my' apartment.
The soundtrack is another plus for this movie, featuring some brilliant 'girlie' songs like You Got It Bad by Usher, Escape (The Pina Colada Song) by Rupert Holmes, Sexual Revolution by Macy Gray and Little L by Jamiroquai.
It's another feel-good chick flick that I seriously doubt your boyfriend would sit through!
Some Humour...
Christina: I gotta pee. Courtney: Did you misplace your bladder today or what?
Christina: Ooh, ice cream! Peter: I had them take out all the calories for you.
Christina: So, hows your day been? Courtney: Oh, you know, the usual. Defending the rights of my broken hearted clients and try to squeeze every single penny out of their miserable cheating spouses.
Assistant: Well Mr. Mooney is downstairs and he is P-I-S-E-D. Jane: Pised?

This sounded like it would be so up my street but I bought it on DVD and absolutey hated it! Maybe I've misplaced my sense of humour, but I thought the script was really flat and unfunny. Me and my friend were in hysterics watching the penis song (but only at how bad we thought it was! Up until that point I'd been thinking it might get better!)
