The Sweetest Thing is a comedy that stars Cameron Diaz and instantly you get the idea that this is one of those light rom com movies that don't amaze but don't offend either. You know the kind of movie that you don't admit to liking even though you do.
Well this movie adopts the crass humour that the likes of American Pie and Something About Mary took all the way to bank. Sadly this is a film where it's too little and far too late. Diaz stars as Christina Walters, she's a single girl in San Francisco who's often seen out partying with her girlfriends Courteney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair). However Christina is one of those women who doesn't get too attached to guys and leaves before a relationship even starts. However one night she bumps into a handsome man Peter (Thomas Jane) and the day after she wonders if Peter is actually the guy she should give a chance to. So with friends in tow, Christina tries to find Peter and try and discover if love is really the 'Sweetest Thing'.
Now this sounds like a perfectly acceptable plot for a decent movie but this decides to go into the sexual comedy routine with full gusto. We're talking full on dance numbers that involve male genetalia, crude lesbianism as well as the resident toilet humour. It's too bad as I really wanted to like this movie as the majority of the cast are great and actors I've liked from previous movies.
Diaz is as sparky as ever while Jane is the perfect male foil. However both of them are deserving of a far better movie than this. Kudos must also go to Selma Blair who really bares the brunt of all the jokes in the movie and does it without any apparant shame. It's really the thin script and limp direction that let the whole side down. The quality of the dialogue at times is very poor with situations that are meant to be funny but just come off as lazy. At one point a joke goes like this.
Courtney walks up to a guy at the bar
"Whats up with you?" - "Nothing, what's up with you?" - "Nothing, what's up with you?", this exchange is repeated several times, we then leave them and come back moments later to the same dialogue. Oh dear...........
Director Roger Kumble played a very fine line with his movie Cruel Intentions, a movie that paid off well by being a bit daring. But anyone who's saw the sequel to that movie will know that Kumble's debut was a one trick affair. His direction here is very average, there are no moments of comedic inspiration and he leaves his cast floundering.
The Sweetest Thing is one of those movies that probably was side splitting on the page but visually comes off as tired and unoriginal. The fact that the film disappeared after a few weeks with a US gross that barely covered Diaz's fee should tell you that it ain't a great movie in a genre that normally reaps in the cash.
