Directed by Roger Kumbel, The Sweetest Thing stars Cameron Diaz as Christine, a 28 year-old commitment-phobe, and Christina Applegate and Selma Blair as her best friends Courtney and Jane.
Apparently, screenwriter Nancy Pimental based the main characters on herself and her best friend, the actress Kate Walsh (you may know her as Dr Addison Montgomery on Grey's anatomy and Private Practice).
I went to see this film ... ...it was sadly lacking in the comedy department.
The film opens with a series of men telling us (the audience) about Christine Walters. These are her disgruntled ex-suiters, who complain that she's a "player", doesn't want anything serious, said-she-would-call-but-didn't, etc... This is to let us know right away this character's attitude towards men and her usual conduct in romantic relationships.

I went to see this film when it was released in 2002, thinking it would be a lighthearted comedy perfect for a lazy afternoon. As it turned out, although certainly lighthearted, it was sadly lacking in the comedy department.
The film opens with a series of men telling us (the audience) about Christine Walters. These are her disgruntled ex-suiters, who complain that she's a "player", doesn't want anything serious, said-she-would-call-but-didn't, etc... After this first segment we meet the three women. They live in San Francisco. Christine is in advertising, Courtney is a divorce lawyer and Jane is a shop assistant.
Christine and Courtney arrive home to a distraught Jane who has just been dumped by her boyfriend. They decide to take her out that night to some trendy bar/club where they spend the night both avoiding and flirting with men, whilst trying to find a man for Jane to hook up with.
Christine gets in a argument with fellow clubber Peter (Thomas Jane) who declines to take Jane off her hands, but later they get talking and start to get along. Peter says he will be going to his brother's wedding outside San Francisco but invites Christine to a party they will be holding at their hotel before leaving.
Christine doesn't go, and then regrets it. So Courtney encourages her to go after him and they both depart on a journey to find Peter at his brother's wedding, all along the way having a few (mis)adventures, none of which bear describing.
The film's tone is coarse and vulgar throughout. The jokes, 99.5% of which are about sex, range from salacious to gross-out.
There is one particular scene midway through the movie when they are at a restaurant, and they spontaneously erupt into a song and dance (set to the music of Right Said Fred's "I'm Too Sexy") that was considered so crude that it was cut from the film's U.S. theatrical release.
The scene was shown everywhere else in the world, though, and on the occasion I saw it, the packed cinema room that up until then had been somewhat noisy (with people eating, drinking, whispering to each other, occasionally snorting at the screen) suddenly fell preternaturally silent when this little musical number came on, bar the sound of people recoiling in their seats in horror, and it remained so for a considerable time after, the people apparently still stunned.
It's clear the film sets out to "shock" people with its depiction of unabashed female sexuality. Only, instead of irreverent, it is just crass.
The film was a commercial failure, and barely grossed enough at the box office to recoup its production cost.
If you are a fan of Porky's, you might like this, otherwise, do yourself a favour and don't waste your time.
Advantages: funny in some places Disadvantages: weak, sketchy plot
...a bit more reserved than the other two, and when she joins them on a night out, she is genuinely shocked by the behaviour of her friends and the other people at the club.
On a night out in a club, Christina starts arguing with a guy, Peter (Thomas Jane), after she tries to set him up with Jane and he protests. Once they have both calmed down they begin chatting, and Christina finds herself falling for him. Christina can't help but thinking about ... ...contacting him. The only thing she has to go on is part of a garbled conversation that she overheard between him and his brother where he mentioned a wedding. Christina and Courtney decide to take a road trip to track down Peter at his brothers wedding, and of course this has some strange and rather unbelievable consequences.
On arriving at the wedding Christina is devastated to realise that she got the wrong end of the stick and it wasn't actually ...

...receive it when I read the front cover and saw that Cameron Diaz was in it. However, I chose to watch it anyway.
The film stars Cameron Diaz, Christina Applegate and Selma Blair. All three having starred in some very funny comedies before. The three girls are shown in this film as being party-goers who like to go out and have a good time. The most memorable part in the film has to be in the chinese restaurant when all three stand up and perform ... ...diners in the restaurant.
The film watches as Christina (played by Cameron) falls for a guy she meets in the nightclub. She then chases him to watch she believes to be his wedding day to stall the wedding.
The storyline throughout the film is diabolical. However, the film is not supposed to be taken seriously. The film is injected with some hilarious scenes and left me in stitches.
If you are looking to settle down and get engrossed in a good ...

Advantages: Top cast, great concept Disadvantages: Not as funny as it could have been!
always, but it kind of felt she was there to try and recreate the sort of success There's Something About Mary had, but The SweetestThing, whilst it has its moments, just can't compare.
The extras on the DVD are quite good though, especially the commentary, which is extremely funny! Also, the two featurettes are well worth a watch.
Overall, if you're a big fan of one of the cast, or this sort of film, then it's a decent enough way to pass some time, but there is a lot of similar stuff out there, that's done better ...
The SweetestThing
The SweetestThing is a cute, romantic comedy chick flick. It was released in 2002 by Columbia Tristar. It features three friends and their lives basically. They are pretty much party girls and enjoy going out to bars, drinking and hooking up with cute men (sounds like a regular Friday night!!)
Now, I did like this movie but I would not call it a classic, ie a chick flick that I would need to or want to see again and again. In fact, my one criticism of the movie would be that's it's rather crude in places where it doesn't really need to be. These girls are cute enough and famous enough in real life not to have to resort to dirty jokes to get a laugh but then I guess that was how they wanted the characters portrayed, as bar hopping girls who are a little bit crazy. For example some of the crude scenes involve ...
