near-perfect product of the new-millennial Hollywood. That's a backhanded compliment, but as a fun-loving Yankee girl's answer toBridget Jones's Diary, the mainstream pandering of Nancy Pimental's lucrative screenplay is undeniably effective. On the opening soundtrack, Macy Gray's "Sexual Revolution" is a perfect accompaniment to gyrating guy-dumper Christina (Cameron Diaz), whose fear of commitment is tested when she meets Peter (Thomas Jane) and knows he's Mr. Right. With supportive gal-pals Courtney (Christina Applegate) and Jane (Selma Blair), she plots to snag the guy, and the movie's road-trip detour mines gut-busting gold from gags involving incriminating dress stains, oral sex, rotting food, garish clothing, and the simple joys of old-fashioned romance. Perfectly cast, raucously ribald, and conventionally charming,The Sweetest Thingis a schizophrenic comedy, but its dual personalities are irresistibly in synch. --Jeff Shannon

Christina is a fun loving, attractive care free babe, who is an expert at the rules of dating. She has stopped looking for Mr. Right and started looking for Mr. Right Now. She loves dancing and is at a good place at the moment. Courtney is an ultra sexy, self centered and arrogant chick, who is also looking for the same as Christina, Mr. Right Now. She gets men right where she wants them and then devours them. Jane sadly is not as such a great place in her life. The minute she gets a man, she becomes very clingy and they all run away. Today when Christina and Courtney get back to their flat Jane is lying on the sofa crying her eyes out, over another man that has left her.
The other two decide that it would be a good idea for them to take Jane out to a club. When they get there though, Jane stays miserable, and the other two end up looking for hot dates, leaving their sad friend to fend for herself! ‘Accidentally’ Christina ends up pinching some guys ass, and they instantly get off the wrong foot. It emerges that his brother is getting married and he is only in town for the night. Although she keeps it up that she hates her new aquatence, she can’t stop thinking about him when she gets home.
Whilst moping about one day, Courtney makes a decision for her best friend. She decides that she is going to take Christine to her new loves brother’s wedding. A three our drive away and that can only mean one thing ROAD TRIP!!!
The two find themselves in the strangest situations, in pursuit of true love, but will it all work out? Will Jane get over her phobia of men? Will Courtney ever become less cocky? Will Christina e able to settle down with one guy, if her nameless love will have her? And more importantly do you like Pina colada?
Cameron Diaz is very well cast in The Sweetest Thing. I am always surprised about how natural she is on screen. She really does have a massive screen presence, which is missing from a lot of stars today. The minute you see her, you fall in love with her as she had an infectious smile and a stunning personality, which shines through in every role she does, including a big green ogre! I think she will be in movies for a long time, as she obviously has talent and a whole load of charm. As Christina Walters she takes full advantage of the dancing aspects of her character and simply sparkles through the film with sheer beauty. I think it is a great performance, which GREATLY helps the film.
Christina Applegate is not my most favorite of actress’s, but I do recognize that she has some talent. She has wicked comic timing, and bounces off Diaz perfectly. I think as Courtney Rockcliff she has the needed amount of spunk and plays off her public image well, making herself as self centered, arrogant and cocky as everyone thinks she is anyway. I am not a fan but, I think this is an energetic performance, in which Applegate plays with people’s perception of her.
Selma Blair was good in Cruel Intentions and A Guy Thing which made me think she was the new Posey Parker, but then came her stupid performance in Hellboy, which made me slightly skeptical, but I am glad to say that she comes off quite well in The Sweetest Thing. Again it is an energetic and natural performance, which falls short slightly, as Blair tries to play her character as very naive when she wasn’t written that way but apart from that I was fairly impressed. It was nothing that impressive, but she obviously had a lot of fun and that came through in the performance.
Thomas Jane is fairly ordinary as Peter Donohue. I always think that the males in these romantic comedies get the short end of the deal, as they never get as good characters as the females. Although ordinary there is nothing I can point out that is wrong with this performance.
Now I like romantic comedies more than most other guys, but I thought that this took the whole, we are all soul mates, lets live happily ever after thing just a tad too far. It works on the principle that everybody looks like Cameron Diaz and we all have the time and money to chase somebody that may hate us for three miles, to go and split up his brothers wedding day. Now like I said I like a bit of romantic fluff, but I thought this was ridiculous.
Also on another bad note The Sweetest Thing must have one of the most awkward scenes in movie history. That scene is the musical outburst that is ‘Your Penis Is Too Big’ it has a granny doing back flips around a café singing ‘You’re too big to fit in her, too big to fit in here, too big to fit in here!’ As if that would ever happen! Although the words are quite clever (my body is the movie and your penis is the star!) it just felt very unprofessional, rushed, forced and awkward.
The gapping plot holes aside the script is quite witty. I honestly think that it does say something about or times, and I am sure a lot of women will be able to relate to it. I know Aimee loved it. I thought that it had an insightful and often funny way of flipping around sexual stereotypes and the script writer has a good way of building the relationship between the three main female characters. Although not Oscar worthy, the script is wittier than critics would have you believe.
Roger Krumble writer/director of Cruel Intentions directs this, with little vision or insight. Visually it is okay, with high production values, but very little in way of direction manages to distinguish this from any over gross out romantic comedy out there. Sure it has some good performances (which I doubt where down to Krumble) but that is about it.
Although a lot of the jokes are forced and silly, it is quite a funny film, mainly because of the great comic performances. Also because of the stupid situations the two run aways find themselves in. Especially when the two go into a dodgy men’s toilet, now that is very, very funny.
Even though I know this is a bad movie, I couldn’t help but fall in love with it’s whimsical charm, it I so sloppy in it’s nature that you kind of feel that it’s the underdog, and as a British citizen (don’t the British always love losers, it’s ridiculous) I loved it for not wanting to be anything other than it is. I got the impressions that the production was rather small in its anticipations, and for that I think it should be applauded.
The soundtrack to The Sweetest Thing includes songs from Macy Grey, Rupert Holmes, Usher and Jamiroquai. The highlight most defiantly being Escape. Everyone sing along ‘If you like Pina Colada, Getting Caught In the Rain’
Okay, all though this isn’t the greatest film in the world, I really enjoyed it, mainly because of the performances, but it does provide a good load of laughs and has its heart in the right place. Not great, but quite a laugh.

She has left a trail of heartbroken men in her wake, and insists she ... ...talk, Christina demonstrates and grabs the arse of a blond man, and orders him to dance with Jane. He refuses, and a bitchy argument ensues. This man, Peter (Thomas Jane), tells Christina a few home truths about her behaviour and she is shocked at his accuracy. She soon switches on the charm though, and feels they have a connection. Shaking it off, she puts it down to her alcohol-intake and tries to forget him, especially as he comes from a small ...

Advantages: A few amusing moments,The lovely Ms Diaz Disadvantages: Tired, lazy and generally unfunny
The Sweetest Thing is a comedy that stars Cameron Diaz and instantly you get the idea that this is one of those light rom com movies that don't amaze but don't offend either. You know the kind of movie that you don't admit to liking even though you do. Well this movie adopts the crass humour that the likes of American Pie and Something About Mary took all the way to bank. Sadly this is a film where it's too little and far too late. Diaz stars as ... ...man Peter (Thomas Jane) and the day after she wonders if Peter is actually the guy she should give a chance to. So with friends in tow, Christina tries to find Peter and try and discover if love is really the 'Sweetest Thing'. Now this sounds like a perfectly acceptable plot for a decent movie but this decides to go into the sexual comedy routine with full gusto. We're talking full on dance numbers that involve male genetalia, crude lesbianism as ...

...film is release here in the UK. Being head over heels with Cameron Diaz and wanting to see the girl that was once Kelly Bundy in the infamous Married with Children, I eagerly waited for this to be released here in the UK. It’s been at least half a year since it was released in the US, and it’s even out now on Region 1 DVD! Was it worth the wait? NO. A captial N and a capital O, NO!

...males will flock to see the movie – tongues hanging out far enough to obscure any rational train of thought.
That is, I assume, the reason why this flimsy romantic comedy (I use that word in it’s mildest form) by ‘Cruel Intentions’ director Roger Kumble actually got as far as a mainstream release.
I must confess that having seen a poster and later on a trailer for this film, I thought it would be worth a laugh and the odd ogle or two. No harm in ... ...love lives - ‘Sex and the City’ style. That plot line alone should make for an interesting movie as that particularly TV Show has become a huge and popular hit on both sides of the Atlantic. Throw into the mix, possibly the one Hollywood actress who would put male bums on seats solely for her looks, in Ms Diaz and there you have it – surefire box office hit.
Ooops – well, on with the plot. I might as well tell you what it’s about, because you probably ...

Advantages: Its cheap Disadvantages: Its a poor quality comedy
a reasonably fun chick flick with the off amusing set piece, but the story doesn't flow, the characters try to hard. The writer explains that the film is based on her and her friends and also includes a featurette on her life on the added extras which is a bit big headed to my mind as I have no interest in her life, the whole film just feels like a vanity project for the director wanting to show how wild and kooky her life with her friends is rather than something designed to make the audience happy.

Advantages: None Disadvantages: You'll never get those 88 minutes back
Directed by Roger Kumbel, The SweetestThing stars Cameron Diaz as Christine, a 28 year-old commitment-phobe, and Christina Applegate and Selma Blair as her best friends Courtney and Jane.
Apparently, screenwriter Nancy Pimental based the main characters on herself and her best friend, the actress Kate Walsh (you may know her as Dr Addison Montgomery on Grey's anatomy and Private Practice).
I went to see this film when it was released in 2002, thinking it would be a lighthearted comedy perfect for a lazy afternoon. As it turned out, although certainly lighthearted, it was sadly lacking in the comedy department.
The film opens with a series of men telling us (the audience) about Christine Walters. These are her disgruntled ex-suiters, who complain that she's a "player", doesn't want anything serious, said ...

with a guy, Peter (Thomas Jane), after she tries to set him up with Jane and he protests. Once they have both calmed down they begin chatting, and Christina finds herself falling for him.
Christina can't help but thinking about Peter in the following days, but has no way of contacting him. The only thing she has to go on is part of a garbled conversation that she overheard between him and his brother where he mentioned a wedding. Christina and Courtney decide to take a road trip to track down Peter at his brothers wedding, and of course this has some strange and rather unbelievable consequences.
On arriving at the wedding Christina is devastated to realise that she got the wrong end of the stick and it wasn't actually Peters brother getting married - it was Peter. She heads home in tears, but that's as much as I'll say, without revealing ...
Three single women, Christina, Courtney and Jane, regularly have a good time in the city's nightclub. Then one night Christina meets her perfect partner but discovers too late that he's left town. Now she and Courtney are off on the road to find him...
