Jesse Sykes is hard to pin down--and that's a good thing indeed. She overlaps with current ... more
trends, but is completely her own artist. There are elements of alt-country, psych-folk, and singer-songwriter-troubadour, but also others that add alluring breadth to her sound, most notably in the band's penchant for drawing upon the best aspects of Haight-Ashbury ballroom sonics. "How Will We Know" swirls and builds with guitar tones that evoke John Cippolina (Quicksilver Messenger Service) and Barry Melton (Country Joe & the Fish). Sykes has taken those sounds (which were often the best part of the era's rather feeble cowboy machismo) and added finesse, poetics, and a woman's vantage point. Her lyrics are rife with cold winds and loneliness, but never without hope, even if that element is handled by the warm glow of the music. The band is a sympathetically balanced entity with supple power and grace. They move between loud and soft without the now cliched extreme dramatics originally pioneered by the Pixies--another example of Sykes eschewing trends and forging her own path. --David Greenberger

Back in the early 1990s when (lagging way behind everyone else as usual!) I bought my first video recorder/player, I took it upon myself to build up a huge stock of films to keep for regular watching, and for posterity. I had always been (and still am) a great fan of Mike Leigh, and it wasn't until I came across "Life Is Sweet" in my local video shop, that I was even aware the film existed. So, I bought a copy, and on the way home picked up an Indian takeaway. I tipped the contents ...
Advantages: Funny, Brilliant Performance From Reese, Visually A Treat Disadvantages: Formulaic, By The Numbers, Nothing New To Offer
, funny and nice watch. Reese Witherspoon is stunning, and it?s a treat for the eyes, but don?t watch it expecting it to be a statement of our time, it to change your opinions or beliefs or be controversial, because it?s all just one big gooey mess, that is a good watch. Aimee, I have to say liked it A LOT more than me, so maybe I am just a cynical, old grouch.
Financially it was more than a sound financial investment. It only cost 30 million to make, but worldwide it gathered the grand total of 181 million making it 9th most successful romantic comedy ever and the biggest Rom Com of 2002 beating Two weeks Notice and Maid In Manhattan.

Advantages: Cheap, with a good mix of songs Disadvantages: Sound quality is bad
I bought this from HMV for £7. The concert was recorded at Celtic Park, Glasgow in 1997, not long before Wet Wet Wet split up. Of course, they have been back together since.
There are 18 tracks, which have been recorded in video, instead of film so it has a very good "live" feel, instead of looking too glossy. Before the concert starts, there's a little bit of back stage footage which came up as "Track 1" on the DVD player.
The first real track is "Sweet Little Mystery" and while it's catchy, as usual it's difficult to really hear what Marti is singing.
Track two is "Wishing I Was Lucky" which still evokes the feel of the down-trodden during the 1980s. The next songs are "Strange" , "Lonely Girl" and "Temptation", followed by the lovely "Sweet Surrender" and the fantastic number one "Goodnight Girl". The rather naughty "Lip ...
