I should have known. This was shown on BBC back in 1972. The way that the suspense was maintained and the rather surprising and memorable ending should have told me. This was written by Nigel Kneale, he of the "Quatermass" stories.

So why am I telling you this now. Well some time ago I got a DVD player and have been trawling my memories and the net to see what I can remember and find on DVD's. I sometimes think that what I may have enjoyed, you may also and as I am so much older you may not have seen this the first time around. As far as I can recall it has never been made into a film or rebroadcast. (according to IMDb it was rebroadcast in 1973)

So what is it all about?
A research group is looking into ways of storing and retrieving information. One of the team members, Jill Greeley (Jane Asher) witnesses a ghost. This is enough for team leader Peter Brock (Michael Bryant) to try and analyse this in a rational manner. He sees this as an opportunity.

What you have is an old Victorian house that is undergoing repair. It is built on the site of a still older building. Workers are not keen on one room claiming to have heard odd noises. Some persons do not believe in any sort of psychic phenomena at all. Some persons seem to be more susceptible than others or are they merely more suggestible.

So orthodox science cannot always come with a rational explanation. This programme looks at science and belief. It is not asking us to choose one system over another. It is acting as entertainment. If there is supposed to be any message in this, it is to keep an open mind about things that we cannot explain at once.

The actors taking the various roles in this programme do a very good and believable job. I am not one who can tell you all about the actor's previous and subsequent history. I have never cared that deeply about any. Should you wish details are kept on IMDb.

The interplay of the various characters is very good. The team leader Peter Brock is not a person one can like very much. Jill Greeley is not the sort of person who screams and waits for the hero to save her. Nigel Kneale has a habit of writing strong female parts. The performances are all very good in my opinion. You can get interested in the characters and feel for them. The sets were all cutting edge for 1972. They may appear to be a little old fashioned to us now. The acting may appear corny to persons who are used to the modern films, the sets quaint, the effects poor and the direction may appear to be rather soft. Undoubtedly if this were to be remade a lot more would need to be spent on effects, though I am not sure who they could get to give as good performances. It is the ending that I can remember very well and is one of the best endings of any ghost type story I have seen.

So what do you get for your money.

The commentary is not too obtrusive, though I would advise watching without it first so you can concentrate on the actions.
The biographies are short written texts.
To access the film through a computer DVD drive you have to agree to a specific licence. I have had problems with something like this previously so I didn't. However the scripts are in Adobe Acrobat PDF format so can be accessed directly from a computer by clicking on the icon and exploring. If you do not have this programme, a copy is provided on the disc. Apparently the road was produced in 1963 but I have been unable to trace any film copies. It again appears to be a rather ghostly story.

Some final thoughts.
Once again I have to say that with a good story you do not need a load of special effects. They can add something to a story and for some they can be the reason for the story. With ghosts, you do not need to see, something hinted at or briefly glimpsed can be more frightening than a conventional figure in a sheet sort of thing. The more mysterious the better. Also sound can play its part. Music or some affects sounds, again the more mysterious the better. We have had so many films of creepy mansions that we know what to expect. Here the story has gone for something rather ordinary but with a subtle twist that make it all the more memorable, because it is the familiar operating in unfamiliar ways that can cause the greatest fear. Here sounds are produced by the BBC Radio phonic workshop. This is not the territory of the slasher or gore feast type of things. It is very civilised but the unexpected can happen anywhere. You're either going to like it or loathe it but I recommend this for a good watch.
