- Story -
Fin McBride is a dwarf who keeps to himself and finds himself being left an abandoned train depot in New Jersey after his best friend dies. He decides to move there and wanting to live his life on his own, though a couple of locals, Joe and Olivia, welcome him and they end up as unlikely friends.
- Thoughts & Opinions -
This movie is very slow paced, once the death of Fins friend occurs and he travels to the depot, the plot seems to slow down alot, though the introduction of the two other characters helps it along but it seemed to be without real direction during what I'd say is the middle of the movie. I didn't feel all that interested in the main character either, which didn't help, yes he's somewhat of a recluse and we should feel sorry for him I suppose, which I did to a small extent but I also felt that he didn't seem particularly endearing really. I did quite like to see how Fin at first ignores a young child who introduces herself to him, thinking that he was a school child like her but then in time he starts to talk to her more and she tries to get him to open up a bit more.
The movie is quite deep if you think about the issues it tries to deal with but then that makes for not much of a comedy movie and yes it is again a movie classified as a comedy when its more a 'make you think' type movie, where your given an insight into how people treat dwarfs such as Fin and it tackles the issues of loneliness and companionship.
The movie is quite poignant I suppose, I think that you could get into it but it drags at the start and I found myself losing interest as the main character really didn't seem to appeal to me enough, there just seemed to be something lacking to me. As the movie progresses, the other characters, as I say, make it more interesting though and its really quite a sobering movie overall, not one to get a great deal of entertainment from but equally it isn't a useless or rubbish movie. I do like to watch the odd quirky movie every so often, thats true and I can see how this would be well received for some but I felt that it seemed to miss something for me personally, perhaps I wasn't in the correct frame of mind for it, I don't know, I rented it so I'm only talking on my experience having watched it once.
I do feel that the movie is somewhat touching towards the end, though I won't give it away by saying quite how but it is and at the end your left feeling like you've just watched a movie that tried to tackle some pretty serious issues and that it is a good attempt at a sobering and thoughtful movie but still it isn't among my favourites when it comes to this sort of movie, personally, its too slow to pick up at the start and I just never quite 'got' the main character im afraid, so, I see it as being too average and hence the 3 star rating.
Also don't worry if your not a train enthusiast, the movie isn't all about trains, for anyone wondering! of course trains are mentioned and it plays a role in the story but ultimately the movie is about loneliness and companionship like I said, these being subjects that intrigue me, so that is one thing that made me interested in renting this movie.
- Would I Recommend It? -
Hmmm this is difficult, I think that perhaps some people would find it somewhat intriguing and interesting and could quite like it but overall, like I say, I felt it was somehow lacking. If the script was tweaked somewhat and some changes made, then yes I'd whole heartedly recommend it but as it is, no I don't think I would, there are other movies of a similar nature that I've enjoyed more, I believe.

Oooh, I wrote a review on this some time ago (Great minds, and all that!). I enjoyed it myself, but like you say it's very slow paced and Fin doesn't really enamour himself to people until he get's to know them alot better. Great review.

I really like this film. It's offbeat and quite deep in a gentle sort of way, though it's not one for those who like non-stop action.

Advantages: A truly wonderful film that is heart-warming whilst having real depth and humour Disadvantages: Peter Dinklage hasn't had nearly enough work come his way for such a good actor
