It also features a change in director. The Plot
Shortly after escaping the attack of a number of Russian agents, James Bond is forced to team up with Major Anya Amasova, Russian officer, in order to halt the actions of villain Karl Stromberg, who is plotting to create an underwater world and destroying civilisation as we know it. Posing as a scientist and his wife, Bond and Anya infiltrate Stromberg supertanker, the Liparus, but are chased by Stromberg right hand man, the fearsome Jaws, a man with sheer brute strength and metal teeth! Can they get away and stop Stromberg from achieving his goals without turning on each other in this tense tale from the Bond team?
The Cast and Performances
Roger Moore is good once more as Bond. I don't feel this is his best performance, and the film is not as flamboyant as those directed by Guy Hamilton, but he is still suave and debonair as ever, and is convincing as Bond. Barbara Bach is sultry as Anya, and the combination and tension between the two is very good indeed. Curt Jurgens is sinister enough as villain Stromberg, but it is Richard Kiel as Jaws who steals the show in terms of best villain. A true opponent for Bond if I ever saw one.
Bernard Lee, Desmond Llewellyn and Lois Maxwell return again as M, Q and Miss Moneypenny. The remainder of the cast support very well.
My Opinion
This is one of my least favourite Bond films. While it is well made, and the characters are good, it is not flamboyant and exciting enough for me as a Bond film. Jaws is a wonderful character, and the interaction between Bond and Anya is good, but it is important to note that this tale was not penned by Ian Fleming, and perhaps this is the difference. Fleming allowed Cubby Broccoli and co to use the title of the book The Spy Who Loved Me, but would not permit them to use the story itself, so it was up to screenplay writers Christopher Wood and experienced Bond writer Richard Maibaum to come up with the goods. While this is a good tale, it does not have Fleming's stamp on it.
The one thing you can always be assured of in a Bond film is the magnificence of the locations used. Travelling around Europe for the main part, this is a beautifully shot film, and perhaps more artistic than some of the others. The capturing of the right mood in the Russian scenes is fantastic, and the camera work must be commended throughout. The special effects are a little dodgy in parts and are a little dated, but there were many more limits 30 odd years ago than there are now.
I do like this film, don't get me wrong, but in comparison to many of the other Bond films, I was a little disappointed. Roger Moore was a little flatter than his previous two roles, perhaps this is a reflection on his combination with a new director more than anything else.
Conclusion
A strong Cold War tale, but pales in significance next to other more flamboyant Bond films.

The tenth James Bond thriller is here- The spywholovedme. A Bond film featuring a marvellous cast, well, they were well heard of in 1977. James Bond was going to meet the memorable Jaws and work alongside a female Russian agent. A first for the Bond series. The spywholovedme also attempted to change the bond series- making the sequences feature a genuine suspense. Well, change can’t be bad- lets hope we get a top-notch film!
Allied and Soviet nuclear submarines are mysteriously disappearing, and both Russia and the UK suspect a third party is involved. M assigns James bond, whilst M’s Russian counterpart- General Gogol, assigns the female agent X. Both were to work together and investigate these mysteries. This partnership does, though, not work out quite right- but Bond being Bond manages ...
Advantages: Great film, interesting extras, looks good Disadvantages: poor 5.1 mix of the sound
1977 was a crunch year for Bond, it was the 10th movie, and it had been 3 years since the last, the disappointing 'Man With the Golden Gun', this had to be a biggie. Harry Saltzman had departed EON productions, leaving huge debts, and Broccoli holding the reins. This one had to be big...the best...Bond and beyond.
I am not a huge fan of the Moore era, and am even less fond of the film that this is a blatant rehash of. There is no disputing that this is 'You Only Live Twice' but Earthbound. However, 'Spy' supercedes its Magpie-like origins and emerges as a most entertaining and classy affair. The budget is evident everywhere, and 'Spy' is a completely different feeling film to 'Man With the Golden Gun'. It oozes style and sophistication, it still may not be the Bond of the books, but it is a great film adventure. The breathtaking ...

THE SPY WHO LOVED ME, the 10th film in the James Bond series, ventures not only into the depths of the ocean but into the deep topic of betrayal and morality as well, placing it among the boldest of the 007 films. James Bond (Roger Moore) is coupled with Russian agent Anya 'Triple-X' Amasova (Barbara Bach) to recover stolen Soviet submarines from evil oceanographer Carl Stromberg (Curt Jurgens) and his gigantic lackey, Jaws (Richard Kiel). When Triple-X learns that Bond killed her boyfriend on a mission in the Alps, she must overcome her selfish notions of revenge and work with 007 for the good of the world. In addition to the Bond staple of girls and gadgetry, the film features beautifully shot footage of the Austrian Alps, Venice, and the Egyptian pyramids. Furthermore, director Lewis Gilbert uses the film to push the cinematic envelope with stunning underwater action sequences, that leave the viewer gasping for air and a vodka martini--shaken, not stirred.
