Spongebob Square Pants is something which my 4 year old has really got into lately much to my despair! He has now watched this film 4 times within 2 days.
The film starts with Spongebob getting excited as the new Crusty Crab restaurant is being opened and he thinks he is going to get the managers job. When at the opening ceremony he is devastated when Squidwood gets the job. During the ceremony Plankton is getting madder and madder as his business is going no where and all he wants is the recipe to the Crabby Patty he decided to get Mr Krab, the Crusty Crab owner, into trouble. He goes and steals King Neptune's crown and frames Mr Krab for the theft.
King Neptune comes to see Mr Krab and he is told how much trouble he is in. Spongebob decides he needs to help Mr Krab and prove he did not steal the crown, so the King's daughter talks her father into giving them time to try and find the crown and prove he is innocent.
Spongebob and his loyal friend Patrick set off in search of the crown but they face danger on their travels and need to prove that they are grown up in order to overcome their fears. Will Spongebob and Patrick find the crown and get Mr Krab off the hook or will Plankton succeed in his plan of taking over Bikini Bottom?
As I said before my 4 year old has now watched this film 4 times and is again asking to watch it this morning. He finds it very funny and laughs out loud at some of the silly things which Spongebob gets up to. My 6 year old watched this yesterday, he sat for the entire film glued to it but when it had finished and I asked him what he thought he told me that he didn't really like it, he says that it was quite funny but not his favourite.
From my point of view I found the animation to be very good and the characters were all good and quite likable. I do find the voice of Spongebob does get annoying after watching it so much. The jokes are fun and daft which does appeal to children but for some reason they also appeal to adults. I know that there is quite a strong following of Spongebob from adults and students as well as children.
The storyline was good and it does have a few lessons which are good for children, like overcoming your fears and such. I did like the way that the story did have some twists in it. I thought that the appearance of David Hasselhoff was quite daft at the end as he really did make a joke of himself, especially wearing his old Baywatch shorts at his age!
The DVD does have some bonus material which includes:-
The Absorbing Tale Behind The Spongebob Square Pants Movie Case of The Spongebob Saving the Surf Animatics Teaser Trailer
We have not been able to watch any of these yet but if we do get around to watching them, if my 4 year old lets me! Then I will update this for you.
The film was Produced and Directed by Stephen Hillenburg and released by Paramount Pictures in 2004. The running time of the film is 83 minutes which I feel is just long enough for a children's film. The certificate is a U which means that this is suitable for all ages and I do agree that there is nothing which children will find offensive, yes there is some mild peril but nothing scary or bad.
This DVD is now available for just a few pounds on Amazon, we did not buy our copy we were given it as a present so I cannot be too exact on the cost. I do recommend this film to all fans of the television series.
How helpful would this review be to a person making a buying decision? Rating guidelines
I'm sorry for the H, but for this to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in the same detail as your review of the film, not just a list of them.
