Ooooooohhhhhhhhhhh who live's in a pineapple under the sea? SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS!……
And so the song goes every morning whilst I'm eating my crusty nut cornflakes. I am in my mid-twenties and have the confidence to say that I enjoy Spongebob Squarepants. In a world gone mad it offers twenty minutes of sheer goofiness, amusement and the little something for the adults as well as the kids. Starting on Nickelodeon, the cartoon has soon grown into the mainstream conscience where it's said that the little yellow fella has a cult following amongst the gay community and of course students. With this kind of audience to supplement the kids it was a no-brain decision to green light a big screen adventure for Bikini Bottom's best patty griller.
For those not in the know let me give you a brief lowdown of what the show is about. Spongebob is a square yellow sponge that works as the Krusty Krab. The McDonalds of the sea where he grills patties for Mr Krab's. A salty seaman style crab with an eye on every dollar. Generally each episode sees Spongebob get into some silly adventure that usually involves his friend Patrick the starfish. Should you wish to gain more information then get the lowdown at the following -
The movie sees Krab's arch enemy Plankton steal King Neptunes crown. He then frames Mr Krabs who ends up frozen by Neptunes sceptre. Spongebob steps up to rescue his boss by vowing to retrieve the crown. So with Patrick in tow he set's off on a journey beyond the boundaries of Bikini Bottom and into unknown waters. They encounter the dangers of the deep along the way and of course Plankton has sent a heavy to make sure they don't make it back.
The movie doesn't have a huge plot because it doesn't need one. It's simple enough to give the fans what they want and the neutrals can understand it as well. What it does is allow Spongebob and Patrick to get into some good gags with the goofy meter close to blowing. Along the way they go to a rough bar, encounter a sinister old lady giving away free ice cream and get a helping hand from David Hasselhoff! In fact it's the final act of this movie that actually makes it worthwhile. Most kids movies are pretty shallow and tug at the usual heartstrings. This one has a scene that is quite moving as it looks like our beloved characters might not make it. In fact I would go as far as to say it's better than what a lot of live action movies try and achieve when it comes to moving an audience. I really can't explain it but at one point I really did feel moved. But of course goofiness ensues at the end of it as the film blends in live action elements of an audience actually watching the scene in the movie. It also helps that said audience are pirates blubbing their eyes out.
The cameo appearance of 'The Hoff' is genius. Who else could you depend on when lives are at stake on the beach? It's good that Hasselhoff seems to be enjoying himself on screen and totally gets the joke. There's also an amusing final face off which takes on cheesy big haired rock and spawns the classic line "His chops are too righteous. The helmets can't handle this level of rock 'n' roll!"
At just under ninety minutes Spongebob's movie is something you can really enjoy. If I had to find fault it's that some fans of the show may be disappointed that a lot of the other characters liked Squidward don't get a lot of screen time. But then kudos to the makers for not actually going down this route and instead creating a lean story that fly's by.
I look forward to seeing it again at some point and hearing that catchy theme tune.
