this is a great family movie based on the bestselling books by Holly Black and Tony Deterlizzi. The spiderwick Chronicles follows the story of a mother and three children when they move to a remote home in the woods from New York. The house belonged to the familys relatives and is full of secrets and a room that hasn't been seen for 80 years. 'Jared' one of the children explores the huge house and hears eerie sounds and finds it mysteroius but no one believes him. Jared stumbles on to the key for something and explores the house to open something. He comes into the 80 year old room and finds a chest saying do not open. Excited Jared opens the chest and takes the book inside out. By doing this he breaks a magical spell and he reads the book by Arthur Spiderwick. The book tells him spells, and descriptions of how to find mythical creatures. Lots of the mysterious creatures are desperate to get the book learn the powers inside it. However becuase of a border of toadstools around the house the creatures can't get the book. Jared gets his brother and sister to believe that the book is real by showing them a goblin and then the adventure starts. Jared and his sibling have to unlock the secrets of the book to save all the good creature from the bad ones trying to get the book. This is a great family movie with outstanding CGI but is a bit for youbger people.

Advantages: A lovely translation of the books' original style melded with strong writing, direction and acting. Disadvantages: It might be a bit too scary for younger children.
Advantages: Good family entertainment - great special effects. Disadvantages: Good film overall but not gripping. A bit of violence in there, which is a bit strong for PG.
