What a classic film! Every year at christmas my whole family sits down and wathces this film from my son all the way up to my nan and great aunties!
They could not have created a more beautiful setting for this film than in the glorius Salzburg - Austria.
The film is opened with the title number 'The sound of Music' with the fabulous julie andrews as maria frolicking around the mountains near her home, an abbey where she is studying for her Roman catholic sisterhood. Until of course she realises that she is runnign late and speeds off. This instantly gives us the impression of a child like nature, and a longing for music and freedom .
During her return to the abbey some of the sisters there begin beseaching the mother superior to cast maria from the abbey as she is just not suitable 'How do you solva a problem like Maria' whilst others in the abbey show a love for the young
nun and wish her only to stay. Of course near the end of their song, in runs maria without her wimple on coming skidding through the abbey courtyard oblivious of her superiors. Of course when she realises it is far too late to compose herself and she simply sighs and enters the abbey, waiting for her next telling off!
The mother superior does call her in, to tell her she is being sent to live as a Governess to the 7 children of the Von trapp household. After reassuring her she is not being sent away but that merely a nun is perhaps not for her.
And so her journey begins, 'I have confidence in Me' and she jorneys to the home of the stern Captain von trapp.
Captain von Trapp, who a widowed ls officer that served in the navy treats his children as thouh they are his cabin crew, summoning them with whistles and barking out the commands. (rather handsome tho) . When with their father the children, are the models of order and discipline however when his back is turned it is made very clear why they cant keep a governess, especially when they play their awful tricks.
Maria eventually wins the children over with affection fun and even fashions them clothes out of curtains!! much to captain Von Trapps dismay!
The children are taught music and stage a show for the Baroness, to greet her (she is Captain von trapps 'girlfriend'
When the baroness realises maria and the Captain are falling in love (particularly during a fabulous austrian dance) she encourages maria to leave. and sadly she does.
Then captain announces his engagement to the baroness and the children are miserable without their governess and seek her out with no luck.
BUT after a song of encouragement from the mother superior maria 'climbs every mountain' and returns to the Von Trapp family where the Baroness gracefully bows out and a new wedding is announced.
After a wonderful ceremony the two jet off on their honeymoon and return to an even more torn apart Austria. The nazis are an ever present threat and more so when the captain refuses to fight for them.
The family make for escape from their home but are spotted and plot to fool the nazis whilst escaping a music competition.
A chase insues and my favourite scene appears when the nuns reveal thery have stolen the naziz car parts.
A truly magnifcent tale the whole family will love time after time. a real must
On request i just thought i would add what is included in this special edition dvd :
Introduction By Julie Andrews, My Favourite Things Retrospective Documentary, Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer A Reminiscence, On Location With The Sound Of Music Featurette, From Liesl To Gretl A 40th Anniversary Reunion, When You Know The Notes To Sing A Sing Along Phenomenon, The Von Trapp Family Harmony And Discord, Storyboard Gallery, Behind The Scenes Photos, Original Publicity Materials, Trailers, TV Spots
Definately worth the extra money to go for the special edition, even if you already have the original.
I was also requested to add my imput on the actors themselves. To this i would say that no one can and ever will top the Magnificent julie andres in my eyes, and this is one of her best. The children are all acted beautifully ( despite the youngest boy not singing his most famous note) And the every charming captain Von Trapp played by charismatic Christopher Plummer is strong and stern yet acted with such heart and warmth. The only actor i did not take to is an extra in the concert scene that just doesnt know when to leave.
I hope this review is helpful to you all

Sorry for the low rate but firstly I would have preferred to read more of your own opinion on the film such as acting, drama etc and less plot. But also as this is a special edition I would have been even more interested in what makes it this, such as the extras, picture quality, booklets etc.
