After the failure of Cleopatra 20th Century Fox were facing bankruptcy and had the choice of using the last of their money to shot one big budget film or three low budget films. They decided to gamble and make one big budget film about the true Austrian story of the von Trapp Family. They called this film The Sound Of Music.
The film took nine months to shoot and was directed by Robert Wise. The main stars were Julie Andrews, who had just shot to fame after the success of Mary Poppins and Christopher Plumber, star of The Fall of the Roman Empire. The songs were written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein II, many of them are still well known today, especially Climb Ev’ry Mountain, Sixteen going on Seventeen and the famous Do, Ray, Me sequence.
CAST LIST
Maria- Julie Andrews Captain von Trapp- Christopher Plummer The Baroness- Eleanor Parker Uncle Max- Richard Hayden
The Movie Musical begins with stunning views of Salzburg, Austria and a Nun, Maria, singing “The hills are alive with sound of music”. After this we discover that Maria isn’t a very good Nun, and as a result of this she is sent by the Mother Abbess to be a Governess for the von Trapp family.
The von Tapp family consist of Captain von Trapp and his seven children. Maria is to be the twelfth in a long line of governesses- all the others left because the children were so badly behaved. After Maria arrives at the family Mansion she is the victim of a few Pranks, but soon she bonds with the children. After this Maria and the children go around Salzburg singing- a skill which Maria teaches them. The film does come to an exciting end, but as I don’t want to spoil the film for those who haven’t watched it yet I won’t say what happens, but what I will say is there is a marriage and the Nazis spring a shock on the family.
I very much enjoy watching the Sound of Music. I always find it cheers me up if I’m feeling down. I know I am not alone in loving the film because it is the most popular film ever made- making Twentieth Century Fox very rich indeed. The film received five Oscars, including best director for Robert Wise. Not everybody is a Sound of Music fan, especially Austrians, who feel offended by the glittery Hollywood version of their history.
Even today it is possible to view this 1965 classic on the big screen, but as a sing a long. To find more information about these singalonga’s go to www.singalonga.co.uk. A CD of the songs from the film is available as well as a DVD and video of the film.
This film is suitable for all generations and is a great family film. Its popularity today demonstrates that the film is a timeless classic, which I don’t think will ever be forgotten. Although The Sound of Music may not be to everyone’s taste, it most certainly gets a 10/10 from me!
