Julie Andrews was very, very big indeed in the 1960's and this was her big chance, an enormous great hulk of a musical which rapidly became her big passport to fame and glory, I congratulate her on her success and she was extremely good in this film.
However, I've spent too many rainy holidays being pressed into watching this awful, awful film, based on the factual story of the von Trapp family in the Second World War to be able to say much alse that's nice about The Sound Of Music.
Okay, in the interests of objective reportage I'll try my very best - Christopher Plummer was very good and some of the songs are....
No, sorry, no can do. This film is dismal because it's so BLOODY HAPPY. Watch Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders' extremely funny adaptation of this film to see what I mean. It's a pompous romp in which those bloody kids think they're wonderful, Christopher Plummer thinks he's wonderful, Julie Andrews thinks she's wonderful and those bloddy nuns do me a mischief every time I see them. "What are we goiung to do about Maria?" Well, I'll tell you sisters, give her a bullet in the back of the head.
Vaguely fair and factual bit:
Story of convent girl, Maria who goes to work for von Trapp family and leads children to safety away from Nazi occupied Austria. Amazing propensity for all parties to sing at drop of hat. "I am 16m, going on 17..." damn, got me at it now. Look I'm off for a week with my De Niro videos to sort myself out. Imagine him as the Nazi: "Are you looking at me, Maria? Are you looking at me?"

Your write up gave me a laugh and I know what you mean, but for some reason I still enjoy this film even though there's a part of me that knows it is gross in some ways. Ann
