Advantages: Stunning views, beautiful trains Disadvantages: Crowds at peak periods - something that would be more enjoyable at quieter times
On my recent trip to Spain I wanted to spend a day out of Palma Nova and revisit Palma de Mallorca, the capital city of the island of Majorca. However doing anything with my daughter tends to lead to arguments and I have learned over the years that it?s usually better to just do things on the spur of the moment otherwise she will dismiss any suggestions with a resounding ?no?.
So I told her we were going to go to Palma and keeping things suitably vague, took a bus from outside our hotel to the Estacio Intermodal in central Palma. From there I crossed the street to the station for the Ferrocarril de Soller (FS), a historic railway that links Palma with the town of Soller on the west coast of the island.
The railway dates from 1912 and was originally built to transport lemons and oranges from the groves on the island to the ports ...
Advantages: Beautiful hotel, beautiful location Disadvantages: Let down by food
I stayed at this great hotel about a year ago. It also claims to be a spa hotel, although we didnt tryany of the treatments available. So unfortunately I cant comment on the 'spa' part!
Overview
-------------
This beautiful hotel is in Soller. It is housed within a beautiful old building, which according to the owners has been a house and another, run down, hotel before that.
Location
-----------
The hotel is near to the main square in Soller, which is about half an hour from Palma, up in the hills away from all th etacky tourist resorts. Its set back from a quiet(ish) street, but is close enough to the main restaurants etc in the town
Room
---------
There are about 35 rooms in total. Our room was great, although a tad small. It was very modern, with crisp white sheets and great smart, neutral decor. We had a lovely ...
Advantages: A true story of one man's courage Disadvantages: Very distressing at times
As many of you will already know, I am an avid reader of anything and everything. I've always had a love of books and will read any book placed in front of me. Some subjects will just captivate my interest and, when my dad lent this book to me, I did not think that a book about railways would be interesting. How wrong I was!
The RRP on this is £7.99, although if you shop around, it can be found online for a lot less (try Amazon marketplace for a price of about £3). I always shop around for my books, as I am a bit of a tightwad haha! But seriously I will happily pay for a second hand copy of a book, as sometimes it is just too expensive to buy it new.
Anyway, I digress and should really get back to the review of this book.
Eric Lomax (the author) lived for most of his life in Edinburgh prior to the outbreak of WW2. While ...
