I remember having a picture book of The Snowman by Raymond Briggs (a best-selling book) when I was about 6 years old. I loved looking through the book and looking at all the pictures and imagining it as a story.
***The Snowman*** The Snowman film is based on the book by Raymond Briggs, which was published in 1978, by Hamish Hamilton.
No-one knew the film would be such a success. It won a BAFTA for best children's drama and was nominated for an Oscar.
Also awarded the British Academy Award for best children's entertainment of 1982, the snowman is an essential children's classic.
***Storyline*** It is an animated film about a boy (James) in rural England who builds a snowman on Christmas Eve, only to find it come to life at midnight. The two of them embark on a series of magical adventures, flying over lands and viewing the snowy scenes of the world. In a magical flying adventure set to the music of Howard Blake and including the famous song 'Walking In The Air', the snowman takes the young boy to the north pole to meet Father Christmas.
We see James and The Snowman, ride a motorbike round the garden, fly in the sky over houses and lands, dance with other snowman, and meet Father Christmas.
This film is animated with music only. There is no talking in this film.
Based on the book - by Raymond Briggs Director - Dianna Jackson Producer - John Coates Supervising Director - Jimmy Murakami Executive Producer - Iain Harvey Music Composed by - Howard Baker
***DVD Extras*** * Snow Business Documentary - The story of The Snowman * Storyboards * Animatic * Alternative Introduction - David Bowie * Audio narration by Mel Smith
This film is available to buy from HMV, Amazon and other good DVD stores and supermarkets, from about £15.99
***My Opinion*** I think this is a truly magical film, which I can still watch every year at Christmas and I'm now 22 years old. Animation in this film is fantastic and although there isn't any talking (just music), I thought I might find this film boring, but I was and still am hooked on watching this film.
Anyone who hasn't seen it (you must be mad), I would strongly recommend you to watch it. I think it's a film which can enjoyed especially by children, but other ages too.
This film is normally shown every year near Christmas time. it's a great children's classic film.
The Snowman is one of the most beautiful and charming films ever made.
***Other Information*** As well as buying the DVD and book, there is also a wide range of Snowman collectables including Snow globes, mugs, figurines and soft toys.
Sorry for the H, but if this is to be a full DVD review, I would prefer to see a review of the extras in similar detail to the way you've reviewed the film, rather than just a list of them.
