The Plot
The Snow Queen is an adaptation of the story of the same name by Hans Christian Andersen.
Gerda's mother was found dead in the snow when she was just eight years old. Since her mother's death, Gerda has lived with her father, Wolfgang. Wolfgang is a morose and bitter man, he owns an Inn, in a mountain village, which is not doing too well. He and Gerda try hard to make a success of the business, but trade is slack and Wolfgang is constantly worried about his business. A new bell boy, Kai begins working at the inn. He and Gerda strike up an innocent friendship which is beginning to blossom into romance. Kai is everything Gerda has ever wanted, attentive, loving and considerate. Just as she begins to fall in love with him, his nature seems to change, he suddenly becomes cold, distant and at times, hateful, towards Gerda. Kai tries to fight his new nature and as he seems to be succeeding, an unexpected paying guest arrives at the inn.
The guest is a woman of mystery. She is remote yet very beautiful. She books to stay for just one night, Wolfgang and Gerda are happy to welcome her, although she is a strange character. The woman is bedecked in white furs and diamonds, she is guarded by wolves and on arrival, they note that she is covered in a fine dusting of fresh snow. Kai seems entranced by the nameless guest and Gerda feels jealous of the attention the mysterious woman is commanding from her young boyfriend. In the middle of the night, the woman vanishes, just as mysteriously as she arrived. Kai too vanishes, leaving a note for Gerda bearing two heart wrenching words, 'Help me'.
Wolfgang is convinced that his bell boy has run off or is dead, only Gerda believes that there is more to Kai's disappearance that meets the eye. She vows to track down Kai and as the thaws of Spring come, she sets off to find out the truth behind 's Kai's absence. Her journey takes her through a fantastic place of living dreams, a palace inhabited by talking polar bears where a princess reigns supreme. Gerda's adventure then pulls her through each of the four seasons, spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each season takes on human form and attempts to either guide or thwart Gerda in her quest.
The plot twists and turn through the travels undertaken by young Gerda and eventually comes to a head when she reaches the frozen ice palace of the Snow Queen. Gerda is forced to do battle with the spiteful, cruel Queen in order understand what has happened to Kai. The outcome? Well, I've no wish to spoil the DVD for others, so enough said!
Availability and Cost
The Snow Queen is an old Christmas favourite in our house and the DVD is one of those that has been around for years, so just where I got it, I do not recall, however a web search showed various online retailers who stock the DVD. Naturally, I cannot guarantee that the retailers and prices I have quoted here will still be relevant, but hopefully this will give readers a rough idea of the cost of this DVD.
The Snow Queen is a family favourite in our house, which gets trotted out every winter without fail! The movie is a piece of adventure/fantasy escapism with a well crafted plot, excellent casting and enough twists and turns to keep the viewers interest. The classification is PG and I would recommend caution in allowing youngsters to watch the DVD. The film isn't gory or particularly scary, but there are some scenes of mild violence and threatening behaviour that sensitive little ones could find upsetting.
The DVD is, as previously stated, is based on Hans Christian Andersen's story, The Snow Queen, and I feel the DVD does justice to the author's work. The Snow Queen is one of those films that captures your imagination or leaves you cold, pardon the pun! Bridget Fonda as the Queen is very well cast and she gives the role an extra 'something' and her acting skills are put to very good use in this DVD.
I would recommend this DVD to others.

Advantages: Nice family movie Disadvantages: Not the standard of a Disney
Mono for musical soundtrack) It has no subtitle options although there is a section at the beginning of the DVD advertising other titles which, annoyingly, cannot be skipped.
My Opinion-
The plot in the film is almost identical to the standard Snow White fairy tale with the wicked queen determined to be rid of Snow White and her friends, she employs many similar methods to kill the young princess and all because she wants to be "the fairest of them all" the main difference is that the years have passed and now we see her dealing with Snow White junior who is being helped by 7 fellows of a different height problem, instead of dwarves they're giants.
The music of the film is typically cheesy in a 1980's fashion, very much reminiscent of the soundtrack for "The never ending story" the animation too is typically 80's brightly coloured ...
