I’ve read a lot of bad reviews about this movie, it seems impossible to find a good one anywhere, but I would definitely place The Skulls in my top ten favourite films. I wasn’t sure whether o write an opinion based on this subject, but since I’m the only one who seems to like it I thought I’d better give all you consumers out there a different point of view.
~ The Plot ~ Luke McNamara (Joshua Jackson, Dawson’s Creek) is a college senior from a working class background who wants to be a lawyer but can’t afford Harvard’s tuition fees. On campus of his Ivy League campus there are secret societies, people know where they are (Who could miss the big signs above them). Nobody knows what they do, except solve all your problems, and Luke is desperate to join them and he does (It would be a very short movie if he didn’t). With membership comes a lifestyle, new car (The actors themselves actually got to pick the cars that the studio rented), expensive suits, pretty girls to hang on their every word at extravagant parties plus a permanent skull scar mark and a rather nice watch to cover it up. Oh, plus entrance into any university of their choice and a rather large addition in your bank account.
So, Luke gets everything he has ever wanted, but his best friends Will Beckford (Hill Harper , City of Angles TV series) and Chloe Whitfield (Leslie Bibb, TV’s Popular) are not happy, fights are fought and Will ends up dead. Luke’s new ‘soul mate’ Celab Mandrake (Paul Walker, She’s all that) is the prime suspect but to go against Celab is to go against the Skulls. The society somes first, before everything else, including the law, which leaves Luke in a very lonely position.
I know the plot may sound a little corny, but it is actually presented and acted in a serious and realistic way. You get dragged into the storyline and want to know what happens next. It’s not as perdictable as it would seem, there’s quite a few twists and a very comic moments, although it’s a pretty serious film on the whole.
~ The Rest ~ Being a thriller, they had to get a couple of action sequences in there. There’s a car chase, some running and guns of course (But not too many. Director Rob Cohen didn’t want big gun scenes, not with modern guns anyway). Jackson and Harper also had to learn how to learn how to row in order for those scenes to look authentic.
The overall look of the film gives it that privileged and isolated feeling, especially in the Skulls liar. I wish I’d gone to college on that campus but then I’d probably feel the same way as Luke does, as if I don’t belong there. The design of the main headquarters are very creative, make you think that people have spent years putting time and effort getting the place so grand and scary to cause an affect on the new hopefuls.
I thought the film was well acted, Joshau was fantastic of course, although some people might disagree ( I didn’t think he was anything like Pacey Witter, except the looks and the accent that is). Leslie Bibb’s talent surprised me as well, I’ve only ever seen her in Popular but she was quite good as Cloe.
~ The real story ~ The story is based upon Yale’s Skull & Bones secret society, although the school is never actually mentioned. There are little hints throughout the film:-
At the boat race, every team is mentioned by its school name, except for "The Bulldogs." (They're the Yale team.)
The characters wear Ys on their sports uniforms.
The Skulls are said to have "322 alumni world-wide." The Yale secret society Skull & Bones uses the number 322 as an identifier on many of its symbols.
The characters are seen celebrating at a pizza parlour they refer to as "Mory's," drinking from a big golden cup. Mory's is an actual place, and the tradition with the song and the big golden cup is accurate; however, it's a formal restaurant, not a pizza parlour.
The new Skulls are sent to raid "Snake & Skeleton." There is a Yale secret society called "Book & Snake."
The real Skull and Bones Society actually gives out watches to each class of skulls, though not necessarily with the whole branding ceremony. After the movie was filmed, Joshua Jackson acquired one of the actual watches and gave it to director Rob Cohen.
Skull and Bones has quite a history, CIA is said to have been formed there and members have included the current President of America as well as his father.
Still thing you have control of your life?
“We live by the rules, we die by the rules.” Senator Ames Leveritt
~ DVD Extra’s ~ Audio Commentary by the director, Rob Cohen. I never buy a DVD that doesn’t have a commentary as it tells you so much about the movie. Cohen doesn’t go on and on as some Directors sometimes do.
Deleted Scenes. About six or seven of them. One includes Jackson as a singing flower delivery boy. Yes, he sings so it is well worth it.
Spotlight on Location: "The Making of The Skulls" A 15 minute or so documentary about the movie with interviews with the cast.
~ Conclusion ~ We always seem to be getting either horror or comedy movies thrown at the teenage market these days. Not that I’m complaining, sometimes you want to just shut off your brain and enjoy what you are watching. Good movies come along every so often that provide a little brain stimulation, such as Dead Poet’s Society and Good Will Hunting, and I think The Skulls should join that list. It’s a high quality movie. Rent it if you don’t want to spend £15 on it but watch it when you know you’ve got time to pay full attention.
Advantages: Pacey, Paul Walker, college boys in tuxes... Disadvantages: Outlandish story, laughable baddies, thin plotline
...Blockbuster has been closed for the last two weeks for refurbishment, and following its re-opening on Friday night, my sister and I decided to check it out and spend a lazy weekend in front of the TV. Being that she has a stinking cold and it’s my time of the month (too much information?), we wanted something pretty light that didn’t require a whole lot of effort. So we picked up The Skulls – a thrillery-type, American college caper ... ...much effort to watch, and the fact that it was sprinkled liberally with Josh Jackson (aka Pacey from Dawson’s Creek, for those who don’t know) and various other All-American hunks exerting themselves physically and dressing up in tuxes, our decision was made.

If you believe that the world is controlled by giant lizards, that J.F.K. was assassinated on the orders of his vice president or the moon landing was a film set in Mexico, then this film may be for you. Conspiracy theorists, love them or hate them, it’s hard to ignore them.

The opening credits ominously tell us that ‘three U.S. Presidents have been members of these societies’, and although it doesn’t name names, it would certainly explain how George ‘Dubyah’, Ronald Reagan or Jimmy Carter got the job.

...to be starting at just the time that I turned on the television, but I stuck with it and was pleased with what I watched.
The Skulls is named after the fictional 'secret society' around which the story is based, and is an American late-teen college/university with a dark feel, not like your American Pie and whatnot. Lucas McNamara (played by Joshua Jackson) is in his senior (fourth, to us Brits) year at an unnamed Ivy League University. This seems a great thing at first, as they give money, cars, girls, and countless opportunities only afforded to 'Skulls above all others'. However, problems come with membership, not least issues with best friends about keeping many secrets from them, and the discovery that the society is a nest of rivalries and cover-ups.
The film becomes a classic "honest guy is tempted by ...

Rent Out The Skulls....It's Great..

I was still annoyed at having wasted £2.50 on hiring out Billy Elliot so I was in two minds on whether to hire out The Skulls. Egged on by my 15 year old daughter who fancies Paul Walker and Joshua Jackson, the two stars of this film,I decided to hire it out. I am told that these two young guys are fancied by all the young girls these days and I thought I was..Oh well!!

Well on to the film itself, its about an elite organisation specially chosen, needless to say the two young stars are picked to join the skulls. Unfortunately a friend of Jacksons is killed and this leads him to reconsider if the Skulls ...

...at school I was in the Rugby Team and the Swimming Team – the benefits of which were endless. Actually, a part from the occasional trip (and please remember that School Trips were never as interesting as the ones you went on with other Teams – but that’s another story) the benefits never really started.
This, it seems, is one of the downsides of going to the school in the UK. Not so in America! Apparently, all Ivy League colleges have Secret Societies ... ...they do – this is the basis of the film “The Skulls”.
In the beginning the credits ominously state that at least 3 former US Presidents have been members of Secret Societies (including George Bush and George Junior).
Now this is the sort of club that I would like to belong to. Every member gets a huge room (looking similar to a penthouse) in a frat house, they each get $20,000 deposited into their bank account, their very own dream car and a woman ...

~My Thoughts~
I love the Indiana Jones series and was really happy when I heard there was a new one being filmed. Obviously Harrison Ford is a lot older, but this doesn't diminish the magic that is Indy.
The plot flows well together, the storyline is pretty much believable, although I did ...
Advantages: Great fast paced action film Disadvantages: A bit long for some of the younger viewers, could have been condensed
wit. I would recommend this film to any Indiana Jones fan & even people who have never seen the previous films as I haven't & after seeing the Crystal Skull I plan on buying them purely based on this film as I have heard the others are even better! The 2 disc special edition DVD has some great features such as behind the scenes footage of the film, behind the scenes photos & the movie trailer. ...
Advantages: Classic Indy action, nicely brought into the fifties Disadvantages: Not a classic endgame
I think the film met with something of a mixed reaction, I would find it hard to pull out any real negatives. It's probably not as strong or enduring as a whole as the previous outings (although I think I'd rate it above Temple of Doom), and I found the ending a little weak in comparison to the rest of the film, feeling like it belonged in a rather lesser movie. There's nothing quite as iconic here as what has gone before, but it's nonetheless a hugely entertaining effort, full of all the highlights you expect from an Indiana Jones film, and comes with some nice DVD extras, including some interesting interviews and features. For my money, Kingdom of the Crystal Skull very much belongs as a seamless part of what is now a legendary quadrilogy; and, given the twenty-odd years between outings, that surely has to be some mark of its success. ...
