Oh! The movie was so unlike any other horror movie. I am perplexed whether the movie can be rated in a "horror" genre, or whether it fits in the genre "thriller and Crime" where the topic is posted on CIAO. Any which ways, I found the movie quite thought provoking.
There were many reasons why I wanted to watch it. Firstly that the director's name Shyamalan, sounded Indian. Well he does have Indian connection and yes, he had a screen presence in his second movie - The Unbreakable. The other reason being that I was always intrigued by Sixth sense - the concept. The third being many of my colleagues who saw it raved about the ending and that it's a must see. The curiosity was beyond a point where I could curb it no more.
The first scene of the movie was intensely powerful in its aim of telling me, and others around, that you should sit tight till the end. The movie then had its gripping moments, though it did seem slow after the great start. But I like the way the mystery was unfolded - slowly and having the audience thinking, anticipating and wondering about the next scene, throughout its length. Never before had I watched any movie with such attention. Believe me, I hadn't watched "Basic Instinct" too with such attention. The movie didn't have the usual gory stuff with ugly ghosts and run-baby-run elements, and yet there was some eeriness maintained. It was this eeriness, probably, that had me focused. Despite my specialty of predicting the end and spoiling my own theatre mood, this movie had an end that left me boxed. It was really a great great climax, which left my mouth open. I didn't close it without uttering the words "Oh! F***". Now I knew why the others had raved about the ending and later I personally thanked them for not revealing it. And for those of you, who haven't yet seen it and are reading this, thank me later for not revealing it to you.
I should congratulate the movie crew for the great story and the cast. The most impressive of them all was the kid (Haley - the same kid in Spielberg's AI). The terrified looks with an unmatched innocence were portrayed very naturally. The child's gifted with an immense talent. The child's mother (name I couldn't gather) is true and realistic portrayal of a divorced mother struggling hard for living and whose child has a problem - a weird one. She deserves the accolades too. As for Bruce Willis, I only knew him as an action hero with blood all over his face, cigarette in his mouth, machine gun in his hand, jumping in buildings or drilling through meteorites. But this movie had a very different role for him, a complete topsy-turvy and Bruce has done it just so well, he amazed me.
The story is about a terrorized child who has a 6th sense, that he can see ghosts. The mother feels that the child needs a psychiatric treatment. Bruce (Dr. Crowe) is a child psychologist, who had a similar case earlier. Only that he did not believe his patient and tries to treat him in a different way by trying to tell him that there is no such thing as ghosts. That patient dies (the starting scene, watch it carefully cause its related to the ending). So a guilt ridden person, he feels that by curing Haley, he can get rid of his guilt. So the entire story later is about how the psychologist gets the kid to overcome his fears, until the end, which I repeat, is an amazing revelation.
Overall, I have high regards for this movie. It's definitely the best.
