Bruce Willis stars in this thriller/horror. His first attempt to move away from the all action, gun toting all American hero roles. His first collaboration with Manoj Night Shyamalan, this film was met with rave reviews and it is easy to see why.
The Story *********
Malcom Crowe ( Bruce Willis) is an award winning child psychologist. One day he finds himself with a new patient, Cole Sear, a young boy who has a problem with dead people. The problem being that he sees them all over the place.
Crowe sets out to find out why this young boy is so disturbed and obviously deranged........or is he? Following Cole around, Crowe becomes convince that perhaps this child is not quite so mad after all. In fact Cole is contacted by the spirit of a murdered child. Further investigation into the murdered child’s death leads Crowe to the conclusion that Cole is receiving information from beyond the grave.
The story progresses, more ghosts pop up and a relationship of trust develops between the two lead characters, Cole and Crowe. What I must say is the ending totally surprised me and left me speechless. Some people have suggested that they new it was coming but I didn't. For me this film has to have one of the best endings of any modern movie! I will say no more so as not to spoil it for anyone else who has yet to see it.
The Cast ********
Bruce Willis – Dr Malcom Crowe Haley Joel Osment – Cole Sear Olivia Williams – Anna Crowe Toni Collette – Lynn Sear Donnie Wahlberg – Vincent Grey
The Actors **********
Willis makes a smooth transition into, what is an unfamiliar role to him. It is a believable performance and much of the films success must be contributed to him. He went on to star in "unbreakable" as an unofficial follow on to "the Sixth Sense", but this film is far better and his performance more credable.
Haley Joel Osment, wow, wow and double wow. If only Macaulay Culkin started out this way, he may never of disappeared into obscurity. An acting debut that astounded millions. Truly the star of the film, outshining even Willis. One can only hope that he continues to provide such great performances in the future!
Manoj Night Shyamalan, directing his first film of any note. The direction is smooth, the film flows and the suspense and thrills that will make you jump out of your seat at times. It's a shame that the "unofficial followup film" "Unbreakable" was so weak in comparison. Still early days for this director who as the potential to become one of the greats!
The Writer **********
Rare, but not unknown, Manoj Night Shyamalan not only directed but wrote the sixth sense. There are only a few successful writers/directors about at the moment and Shyamalan is proving to be one of the best. The story is compelling and will keep you interested throughout. Manoj Night Shyamalan gets a big thumbs up for this one!
Overall view ************
Great story, great acting, great directing, great ending, not much else you can say about it! At 1 hour at 47 minutes long, you will be engrossed throughout. Another film that I believe is underated as a "PG" the subject matter will probably sail over the heads of younger viewers. Some scenes will also scare the pants off them!
The film was released for sale 25th Sep 2000 and is a must for any serious video collectors. Buy it now!
