The Sixth Sense is about eight year old Cole Sear (Osment). Cole sees dead people. He meets with Dr. Malcolm Crowe, a renowned child psychologist. Crowe (Willis) tries to help Cole while helping himself.
It is the number one grossing thriller of all time. With grosses nearing $300 million, the DVD release was going to be an “event.” I'd experienced this movie in the theater and liked the movie. With the DVD, I was hoping that I'd be getting something that would be special. The transfer of the movie is very good. There were the supplements that I expected, too. There isn't a commentary track by director M. Night Shyamalan, my only real disappointment. Night does show up in most of the short features in the special features.
The transfer of The Sixth Sense Miramax has delivered is very good. It's an anamorphic transfer to boot! There is very little artifacting noticeable and very little graininess or pixelation. The flesh tones were good, acceptable for Philadelphians in what looked to be November. The blues are very good, ranging from the azure color of the sky to the
blue eyes of some of the characters. The reds in the movie are bright and brilliant. They have significance, and are beautiful. There are numerous other colors that stand out. The layer change isn't too noticeable, a change from past Buena Vista releases. The sound of the movie on DVD is very good. The audio is Dolby Digital 5.1 and sounds great. The voices are centered most of the time. There are spots where you will hear some from the sides, too. The music in the score translates nicely through your speakers. There is a little LFE track and the ominous musical sting. There is an occasional orchestral flurry that roars through with a vengeance. As with most thrillers, the music helps tell the story. The dialogue is mastered well with the music. There is genuine fear conjured up with this musical soundtrack.
Buena Vista has delivered with some interesting and informative extras. There is a storyboard to film comparison on the disc. The short feature focuses on a specific scene. This is a nice feature. M. Night Shyamalan narrates this and other portions of the special features. There is a Sound and Design featurette included. This is with interviews of members of the crew discussing the sound. It's informative to see the procedure used to make the movie. There is a short featurette called Rules and Clues with some of the cast. This feature discusses the movie by way of talking about the characters. There is a short feature on the cast with interviews of members of the cast and crew. This looks more like part of the promotional package opposed to it being a true "extra." There is a short conversation with director M. Night Shyamalan. The interview is very informative on the movie and the cultural phenomena surrounding The Sixth Sense.
Included on the DVD is the original motion picture trailer. There are a thirty second spot and a 15 second spot included. If you click on a box on the second page, you will discover M. Night Shyamalan introducing his first horror movie. It's a ninety second clip of an amateur film. This can be considered an Easter Egg for some people. Since the box isn't really "hidden." It's in your regular viewing area and there is no need to manipulate menus. There are also trailers for Mission to Mars, The 13th Warrior, From Dusk Till Dawn 3 - The Hangman's Daughter, In Too Deep and Summer of Sam. All of the trailers are in widescreen except In Too Deep. All of the trailers play back to back. You have two options of viewing them. From the extras menus and they are also played when you insert the DVD.
What can I say? I was stunned in the theater when I saw The Sixth Sense. Without spoiling the ending of the movie, let's just say that it's unexpected. This is a movie that the entire family can enjoy. I watched the movie a number of times since I picked up the DVD. Ever the trivial one, I'm always finding things that I didn't see in the previous viewings. It's quite addicting to watch for the subtle clues that surround this movie. There is MUCH more than meets the eye in the first viewing. The transfer is very good and the sound is impressive. I'm stunned in my house, too! The Sixth Sense was an unexpected blockbuster hit in the summer of 1999. With many other movies out there to compete with it, this movie has grossed $300 million dollars. The Sixth Sense is now the highest grossing thriller of all time. This DVD doesn't disappoint in the slightest. As I mentioned before, the only thing missing is a commentary track by director M. Night Shyalaman. This is a DVD of a movie that has repeated viewings written all over it. Don't just sit there! Get up and go get The Sixth Sense: Collector's Edition Series if you already haven't. You will thank me later for it.

Saw this film on holiday in New York - prior to the hype, thankfully, so was unaware of there even being a shock ending. Loved Sixth Sense and really would like to see it again. So perhaps I will buy the DVD. I ran straight out to see Unbreakable and that was bloody dreadful. So I'm not sure you're missing anything in not having a commentary by the director - perhaps he's a one-hit wonder and not that deep after all!.

I may have been reading too deep, but another "clue" I picked up on is Cole's surname - a deliberate mis-spelling of "seer" perhaps? I need to get out more... Great op by the way... P$
