Many of you will have already either seen this film or heard about it from friends, the Sixth Sense became one of the surprise hits of the year when it opened at cinemas, bringing with it some excellent acting, directing and plot twists, but more on that later.
The film begins with a cosy scene, child psychologist Dr Malcolm Crowe (Willis) and his wife sitting down to talk about an award that he has just won for all of his good work. They are about to leave the room when the sound of breaking glass brings them face to face with one of Dr Crowe’s old patients. The boy accusses Dr Crowe of not curing him and suddenly pulls a gun on the Doctor, shooting him in the stomach.
When we catch up with Dr Crowe it’s the next autumn and he is sitting on a park bench waiting for his next case, an eight year old boy called Cole Sear (played by Haley Joel Osment). Cole has many problems adjusting to life and getting on with other children, so Malcolm tries to help find what exactly is wrong with Cole. He sees this as a way of repenting for the other boy that he couldn’t help before and soon finds out what is troubling Cole so much, which comes as a shock to him when the boy turns round and says “I see dead people.” At first Malcolm is reluctant to believe this is true, but the growing realisation is that this is the only explanation for Cole’s behaviour.
The storyline is so well scripted that it keeps the viewer hooked until the very end. It starts as a typical thriller and slowly twists the supernatural element into the story in such a way that it all makes sense. The focus remains on the two main characters for the whole film, which means that the audience really attaches themselves to the doctor and the boy during the movie, making the whole experience seem more personal. As most people already know, the plot twists are the most famous thing about the film and really make you think about what you have just seen, enough even to make you watch the film for a second time and see it in a different light.
The acting from the major stars is fantastic and Haley is excellently cast as the young Cole, not too sweet, yet likeable all the same. Directing, too, is as good as you can get and every detail is captured, meaning that when you watch the film again you can pick up so many things that you missed the first time around.
The Sixth Sense is such a well put together film that it would be a shame to stick it on a poor DVD with no extras. That’s why it’s such a relief to see that the DVD package is pretty good in itself. The film is presented with an anamorphic picture and the Dolby 5.1 sound is a must, it is used to such good effect that listening to the sound effects will cause a shiver down your spine. Extras add to the package too, a Storyboard to film comparison shows how the film came together from the original concept. A Conversation with M. Night Shyamalan is an interesting insight into how the director saw the vision for the movie. ‘Rules and Clues - Background to the film’ shows the clever way that the plot twists were crafted into the storyline. There are plenty of other bits of information about the cast and music design too, plus a few deleted scenes with commentary on why they weren’t used and 3 Trailers, plus Filmmaker/Cast Biographies.
This is one film you have to own, you really do need to see it more than once to get the most out of it. Shyamalan has proven himself to be a great director and is now one of the hottest in Hollywood, justifiably so. Listen to your Sixth Sense now and watch this incredible movie, it will make you think again about how films should be made.

I thought this film was excellent in itself, and I highly recommend the DVD version as the deleted scenes and interview with the director add to an already superb film experience!

I really liked this film - the twist at the end was excellent - suddenly so many of the scenes before it made sense. A really creepy movie!
