Sixth Sense, 1999, Rating 15, Running Time 107 mins.
When I first heard about this film I was ensure if I was going to enjoy it or not as I am not a horror film fan, but I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was not some kind of scary horror film and in fact it touched on several different genres Horror, thriller and drama. The Story
The story starts with Child physiologist Dr Malcolm Crowe (Bruce Willis) on the evening he has been given an award by the mayor for all his hard work and dedication over the years. As he celebrates with his wife (Olivia Williams) an intruder brakes in to the house; however this intruder is no stranger it is one of Crowe's child patients Vincent (Donnie Walberg) now grown up. He is unhappy with the help that Crowe gave him as a child and says that he did not help at all and kills himself.
After this experience Crowe starts to visit a young boy called Cole (Haley Joel Osment) after reading Cole's notes and talking with him, Crowe starts to find similarities between Cole and Vincent. Crowe starts to gain Cole's trust and Cole confesses to him that he 'sees dead people'. Crowe does not believe Cole at first but together they work out what is happening to Cole and Crowe is able to help
the boy, and in his own way Cole also helps Crowe.
My Thoughts Personally I think this film is genius, it is so cleverly written and directed, you are immediately hooked. I love the fact that it is not full of blood and guts, but it is still scary in parts more because of what is implied rather than what you actually see.
A lot of detail and thought has gone into every inch of this film, for example every time Cole sees a ghost that is angry cold breathe can be seen, also none of the ghosts have been given shadows because they are dead. It is such small details that may not be seen the first time around but when you watch it for a second time you are able to pick up on the subtleties that where not evident the first time you watch it. The acting is incredible in this film; Bruce Willis gives an outstanding performance as child Psychologist Malcolm Crowe. You really follow his journey through out the film and it is more about the effect Cole has on him than the effect he has on Cole that is the real focus of the story.
At the same time Haley's performance as Cole is absolutely incredible and way beyond his years. For such a young boy Haley gives a very mature performance and really touches on the heartstrings of those watching him. His performance is supported beautifully by Toni Collette who plays his worried mother Lynn Sear. Toni has great screen presence and really sucks you into her world and what she sees in Cole. Anyone who is a mother or works with children will sympathise with Lynn and the worries she has for her son.
It is not surprising to me that this film did so well, it was not predictable and had a great many twists in the plot to keep you guessing the whole time. This film really is a must see, I would also advise that you watch at least twice because you will see things from a different angel the second time around. Characters/Actors
Bruce Willis plays Child Physiologist Dr Malcolm Crowe; Crowe has dedicated his life to working with children and has even put them before his wife. He is good at what he does and even won awards for his efforts, but on the evening that ex patient Vincent kills himself all of Crowe's self belief also dies. After meeting Cole, Crowe knows he has to help this boy in order to prove himself again. Bruce Willis best known for his role in the action packed 'Die hard' movies, in this role however he shows a more sensitive side to his abilities. Haley Joel Osment gives an amazing performance as Cole Sear; Cole is a young boy who lives with his mum. His mum is worried that Cole has been affected by the divorce between her and Cole's dad, and that is why he sometimes acts strangely. After meeting with Crowe it becomes clear that Cole has been experiencing something super natural and that in fact he can see 'Dead people'. Haley's performance is outstanding and he is defiantly someone to watch out for in the future. Haley made is film debut as Tom Hank's son in Forest Gump and after his performance in Sixth Sense won himself an Oscar nomination.
Toni Collette plays Lynn Sear Cole's mother, Lynn Sear is a single parent divorced from Cole's father. She is struggling to understand what is wrong with her son and wants desperately to help him. Toni Collette is best known for her role as Muriel in 'Muriel's Wedding' 1994, in this film however we get to see her more serious side, she is an under rated actress who I would love to see more of. This film was written by M Night Shyamalan who has also written Wide Awake 1998 and Stuart Little 2000 to name a couple. M Night Shyamalan also directed this film as well and had a hand in the casting, he apparently wanted Bruce Willis from the word go and was thrilled when they found Haley to play the role of Cole.
Special Features This special edition feature has many Special Features talking about the film, how the story evolved, about the writer director M Night Shyamalan, who helped him create what we see on the screen, the actors and why and how they are cast. Two of the most interesting special features offered on the DVD are:
Rules And Clues - I found this special feature very interesting, as it looks at the rules and clues that are hidden with in the film that you may not notice on first viewing. It shows you the obvious that is perhaps not so obvious until it is pointed out. After watching this special feature you will view the film in a different way. 5 Deleted Scenes - Writer/direct M Night Shyamalan talks about the scenes he had to cut because they were unnecessary for the story, he also talks about his hear break of cutting his favourite scene.
Where can I buy it? This DVD is available from Amazon new for £6.97 or new and used from £3.95 which I must say is a bargain.

I agree - this is one of the few films I have actually bought - I enjoyed watching it in the cinema when it came out. This film and "The Others" are the best two ghost stories written recently. As with his other films this is as much a social commentary film about people, relationships and communication as it is about ghosts. - There is an easter egg of an early amateur film hidden on the disc too!! - Andrew
