The Simpsons: Film Festival is a 'best of' collection of four episodes. One of my favourite things about The Simpsons is their memorable movie references, and these four episodes are four of the greatest examples of this. The episodes are "Beyond Blunderdome", "A Star is Burns", "22 Short Films About Springfield" and "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie".
In "Beyond Blunderdome" Homer wins tickets to see Mel Gibson's new movie, a remake of "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington", and asked to review it, which he promptly berates for being boring. This bothers Mel so much he flies back to Springfield and asks for Homers help in order to re-edit the film. What results is a bloody tour de force that has Mel decapitating the President of the United States. The remake is so crazy that it could be true, and that's how they get the parody spot on, because you wouldn't be surprised if they DID make an action remake of "Mr. Smith". Mel Gibson is fun and is always ready to take the mickey out of the Hollywood system and previous films of his. A great recent episode.
"A Star is Burns" has Springfield holding it's first ever film festival. As it was Marge's idea she picks a film critic to be part of the jury, choosing Jay Sherman (a character from another show). Mr. Burns submits an entry and tries to do anything he can to win. A good episode, apparently Matt Groening didn't like the idea of a cross-over character so it's the only episode where in the credits he isn't mentioned as he didn't want anything to do with it. Very memorable, funny moments, including a rivalry between Jay and Homer and Barney's short film, "Pukahontas".
"22 Short Films About Springfield", as the title suggests, is a series of shorts featuring various characters going about their daily lives, including Dr. Nick saving the day, Chief Wiggum talking about McDonald's (in a great parody of Pulp Fiction) and getting in some trouble with Herman, and Moe getting robbed by Snake. Great writing as the stories are intertwined and features different characters from different stories. A nice in-depth look at the day to day life of Springfield's residents, some of whom we don't see that much on screen.
And finally, in "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie" the titular movie is here, and Bart is excited about seeing it. But his constant bad behavior have given Marge and Homer only one choice: he is banned from seeing The Itchy and Scratchy Movie while everyone he knows will be watching it. A good backdrop of Homer and Bart's relationship in this episode, it's a well crafted episode and features a favourite of the Simpsons writers, showing what The Simpsons will look like in the future. Also memorable for "Steamboat Itchy", the first Itchy & Scratchy which looks an awful lot like a certain mouse's first ever cartoon, down to the dilated pupils.
No extras at all, I can't believe how expensive this DVD with no extras and only four episodes. The safest bet is to buy an entire season I think.
