Any four episodes ofThe Simpsonschosen at random would make perfectly acceptable ... more
entertainment, butThe Simpsons Film Festivalis a particularly happy selection. One of the shows many delights has always been its unending stream of movie parodies, and here we have four episodes devoted to just that. In "Beyond Blunderdome", Mel Gibson (playing himself) sends up his tough-guy persona when he hires Homer to produce his latest movie. Then in "A Star is Burns" Springfield hosts its own film festival (with acerbic guest critic Jay Sherman in attendance). The competition boils down to Barneys hauntingcinema veritéshort about the horrors of alcohol or Mr Burns grandiose vanity project (though Homer prefers Hans Moleman being hit by a football). "22 Short Films About Springfield" is a series of parodies within a parody featuring Springfields secondary characters, including Milhouses dad and Chief Wiggum in a gloriousPulp Fictionsequence. Finally, the shows own internal parody cartoon duo hit the big screen in "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie", while Bart and Homer lock horns about going to see it. They sell Soylent Green in the future cinema foyer; and Homer loves it, of course. On the DVD:just four episodes is hardly stunning value for money, but its perhaps quality not quantity that counts here. Annoyingly there is no "Play All" facility, a serious let down in all theSimpsonsDVD releases (Futuramahad the same problem, too). The only extra feature of any note is a three-minute montage of Troy McClures finest moments. Sound is unexceptional Dolby Stereo and the picture is standard 4:3 ratio. --Mark Walker

Here are the lists of episodes with information about the story lines, original air dates, writers and directors of each of the episodes and my personal opinion on each. There are in order of how they appear on the video. They act as a memory refresher to those of you who have seen them and a taster for those of you who haven't.
[AABF23]- Beyond Blunderdome Original Air Date: 26 Sep 1999 Written By: Mike Scully Directed By: Steven Dean Moore Special Guest: Mel Gibson Story Line: Homer is asked by Mel Gibson to help him produce and direct a film, this can only be asking for a distaster! My Opinion: This is a mad sort of episodes that doesn't really fit into the swing of things with all things Simpsons, this is one of the seasons when the story lines go a little bit more far fetched. With special Guest Mel Gibson, this is an episode not to miss as Mel Gibson plays himself and you can see him in cartoon form.
[9F03] - Itchy & Scratchy: The Movie Original Air Date: 3 Nov 92 Written By: John Swartzwelder Directed By: Rich Moore Special Guest: Neil Armstrong Story Line: Bart's behaving very badly and Homer won't punish him. Marge forces Homer to punish Bart, so Homer comes up with the almighty punishment...Bart is not allowed to see the Itchy & Scratchy Movie. My Opinion: A great story line, with some really good jokes. The ending is brilliant as we see Homer and Bart in the future, and Bart has become a high court judge!
[3F18] - 22 Short Films About Springfield Original Air Date: 14 Apr 96 Written By: Richard Appel, David S. Cohen, Jonathan Collier, Jennifer Crittenden, Greg Daniels, Brent Forrester, Rachel Pulido, Steve Tompkins, Josh Weinstein and Matt Groening Directed By: Jim Reardon Story Line: This is an episode showing 22 short films about Springfield, which include Herman planning to set off a bomb, Homer trapping Maggie inside a newspaper vending machine and Lisa getting gum caught in her hair. My Opinion: One of my favourite episodes as it includes a spoof of Pulp Fiction. The way that this episode fits together is brilliant, and with the amount of writers on this episodes, it has paid off!
[2F31] - A Star is Burns Original Air Date: 5 Mar 95 Written By: Ken Keeler Directed By: Susie Dietter Special Guest: Jon Lovitz (Jay Sherman) and Maurice LaMarche (George C. Scott) Story Line: Springfield decides to have a film festival and Marge invites Jay Sherman to help judge it. Mr Burns decides to make a movie, and ensures it will win by bribing everyone involved. My Opinion: An original story line for a cartoon, and has some really good scenes. Look out for Homer being outdone by Jay Sherman in a burping contest!
Conclusion **************** This is another collection of four episodes on VHS, and the problem with videos is that the quality is outdone by DVD and they can only fit four episodes on one tape. These are four really good episodes and they won't be available on DVD yet because they are from later seasons. They are fun to watch and go great with all the other videos in the collection. I brought mine from a video club that I joined, and that was when this video was first released.
You can buy this tape really cheap new and second hand, it's nice to have this collection but I wouldn't spend a lot of money on it, especially after the Dixons chain of stores is going to stop selling video players. Simpson's fans will appreciate this. Possible collectors item?
The Simpsons: Film Festival is a 'best of' collection of four episodes. One of my favourite things about The Simpsons is their memorable movie references, and these four episodes are four of the greatest examples of this. The episodes are "Beyond Blunderdome", "A Star is Burns", "22 Short Films About Springfield" and "The Itchy and Scratchy Movie".
In "Beyond Blunderdome" Homer wins tickets to see Mel Gibson's new movie, a remake of "Mr. Smith Goes ... ...help in order to re-edit the film. What results is a bloody tour de force that has Mel decapitating the President of the United States. The remake is so crazy that it could be true, and that's how they get the parody spot on, because you wouldn't be surprised if they DID make an action remake of "Mr. Smith". Mel Gibson is fun and is always ready to take the mickey out of the Hollywood system and previous films of his. A great recent episode.

Advantages: The last three episodes Disadvantages: The first episode
The Simpsons have always found way to weave in celebrity guest stars to the show. Danny DeVito played Herbert Powell, Homer's long lost brother, Dustin Hoffman played a teacher. And of course Kelsey Grammer played the unforgettable Sideshow Robert Underdunk Terwilliger.
Some such as Sting, Bob Hope and Tom Jones have even managed to play themselves. Believably.
But as the first episode on this tape ("Beyond Blunderdome") shows, the originality ... ...is just one example of the now endless "celebrity-conveniently-winds-up-in-Springfield-and-has-crazy-adventure-invloving-Homer-getting-beaten-up" deal.
The last three episodes look more promising. "A Star Is Burns" Notice how a few years ago, the writers could pun a film title wonderfully. The title seems to suggest this episode someway revolves around Mr Burns, Homer's aging boss and selfish billionaire. And it does. Springfield hosts a film festival ...

The simpsons are a legendary cartoon family that live in springfield America (dunno which state though lol). This DVD has four brilliant episodes,The four episodes are Beyond Blunderdome, Itchy & Scratchy - The Movie, 22 Short Films About Springfield and Viva Ned Flanders. the two best are no doubt beyond Blunderdome, as it stars mel gibson. And Secondly 22 short storys about springfield, its basicly hilarious references to well known films, theres ... ...off, u wake up in the morning feeling very unrested, and hearing a title theme, or collection of clips that sound very familiar, as if you've been subconciously lisening to it for the last 8 hours, Silent menu's are much more practical to be honest. And if u buy the boxsets later ...

DVD Description
This SIMPSONS collection features four movie-related episodes. In "Beyond Blunderdome," Homer ruins a Mel Gibson film--and possibly the actor's career. "Itchy and Scratchy: The Movie" has Bart and Homer clashing over permission to see the gory animated mammals in their big screen debut. "22 Short Films about Springfield" is exactly that, a witty look at the various residents of the Simpsons' hometown. Finally, "A Star Is Burns" pits a surprisingly soulful short film by Barney Gumble against a vanity production funded by the ruthless C. Montgomery Burns in the Springfield Film Festival.
