The Simpsons started out life as a cartoon short on the Tracy Ullman show back in 1987. After a couple of years it was successful enough that the started making full length episodes and this is where the simpsons as we know them today started. The animation isn't very good, and the backgrounds were a bit bland, but you could see even back then the show had great potential.
So here we get introduced to the family: Homer, the loveable but clumsy dad, Marge, the ever-suffering housewife, Bart, a mischievous 10 year old and Lisa, the brains of the family. Homer's voice was still a Walter Matthau type low pitch, but that begins to change after this season. The secondary characters were still finding their place as well, the writers didn't know who the audience would like the most so it was very much a trial and error thing.
There are only 13 episodes in this season, but there are a lot of episodes here that shadow things to come, like "Krusty Gets Busted" where we first see Sideshow Bob's evil side, or "Call of the Simpsons" that starts the trend of baring all in the simpsons. There are also some great movie references, from Kubrick to Citizen Kane, but in my opinion the best is yet to come.
The episodes are entertaining to watch, but I prefer later season to this one, but it's very important as this is where it all began, where a regular family become world famous. I think think that's why a lot of people liked it, it was very easy to relate to. Everyone has an troublesome brother, or a stupid dad, but it shows that they can get along and love each other and stay a strong, supportive family. At least until next week...

I still find hard to think to actually BUY the Simpsons on DVD since they are on tv everyday and even if I would want to see a certain episode again I would find hard to remember even in which season it was! But still nice review!

Advantages: The product itself is great: a succint collection of complete series one with everything in one package. Funny. Good commentary Disadvantages: As a program, series one is far worse than later series of Simpsons.
