This is, fairly obviously, the DVD of the first TV series of the very popular show, 'The Simpsons'. For those of you who haven't heard of it before, the Simpsons is a cartoon series that has been running since the early 90s, which focuses on one particular family, the Simpsons. It's a great cartoon for children, but also has a lot of jokes in it that only adults will get, making it accessible for all ages of viewers.
On the TV the Simpsons is on something like the eighteenth series (I could be out by a few series though so don't quote me on that), and I have heard from quite a lot of people that its quality has been deteriorating rapidly in recent years. In the mid to late 90s, the Simpsons was the must-see cartoon for children and young teenagers as well as their parents, so it is quite a disappointment to hear that it isn't what it used to be.
And so, that's why I decided to buy the first series on DVD - to see how good it used to be in the beginning, regardless of whether or not it's run out of steam in the past few series. That, and also because I managed to find the whole series for only £8 (pre-owned) from Grainger Games, which I thought was a bargain for almost six hours of viewing that I knew I would enjoy and watch more than once. The current price to buy it new off amazon is around £20 - not a bad price, but I'm not sure I would've paid that for it.
So anyway, is this series any good? In short, yet it is. It has a very different feel to my favourite series (around the series 5-9 mark), as it was obvioulsy very new, and hadn't seemed to decided how they wanted it to go yet. Fans of more recent series will notice that Homer's voice is less goofy in this series, as is his personality, which I much say is funnier and more enjoyable to watch in later series. However, I feel that series 1 of the simpsons is a good introduction to what is now a very successful and long running cartoon series, as it gives you a feel for the characters but still allows them room to develop.
If you're interested in which particular episodes can be found in this series, then a full list of all 13 episodes can be found by searching for the product page on amazon, but a few of the classic and famous episodes include: Moaning Lisa, The Telltale Head, Bart the Genius and Krusty gets Busted.
In conclusion, this is a really good DVD collection, whether you've seen the Simpsons before or not. The good thing about cartoons such as the Simpsons is that you don't have to start at the beginning and go through in order to know what is going on in the story, but in this case, because the first series is so good you may want to anyway! However, I must say that my friend has Series 7 on DVD, and I think in general it's much funnier and includes a lot more episodes that I think are brilliant.

Comedy - Original Language: English - Classification: 12 years and over - Starring: Tessa Peake-Jones, Buster Merryfield, David Jason, Nicholas Lyndhurst
Comedy - Director: Richard Boden, Mandie Fletcher, Martin Shardlow - Original Language: English - Classification: 15 years and over - Starring: Hugh Laurie, Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry, Brian Blessed, Tim McInnerny, Tony Robinson, Rowan Atkinson
The first two series are the best for me. Its gone way downhill and its true Homer was quite different when the Simpsons started. Bart The Genius is one of the great episodes. Nice review.
