This box set is great for Simpsons fans-it contains all the episodes of Season 1, with commentary on all episodes, with relevant production notes and promotional footage, in one set. The box is well decorated in simpsons designs, with lots of information-not just a Simpsons disc (or 3 of them, even) but a whole SImpsons package!
The show itself however is not magnificent. Yes, if you are a fan of the Simpsons like myself, you will want it as it is the basis of the show and contains many funny jokes that started the early 90's Bartmania craze. A notable differewnce is the realsim of the show and the way real issues and family problems are confronted, featuring many examples of family relations and emotions. However, if you are a comedy lover in general, it probably would be better, given the choice, to buy a later Season Box Set first. By all means have this in your collection, but it is not as good as later series.
The menus are easy to operate and features good. Commentary is very funny, relevant to the show, and interesting. So the features are worth it! Also there are original scripts for 'Bart The
Genius' 'Moaning Lisa' 'Bart The General' and 'Some Enchanted Evening' which are good for the fan as you can see how an episode beings, including scenes taken out opf the final edit. There are audio outtakes from 'Life In The Fast Lane' (which aren't that interesting), and part of the original version of 'Some Enchanted Evening', which is interesting but not fantastic. On top of this are original Matt Groening (creator)sketches, which are interesting, and one of the original 'shorts' from when the SImpsons began on the Tracey Ullman show 'Goodnight Simpsons', which is nostalgic viewing.
Full Episode Listing:
SIMPSONS ROASTING ON AN OPEN FIRE (1st Christmas Special. Full of sentiment seen less nowadays, with a good few jokes that define the characters. Looks very aged now!)
BART THE GENIUS (Bart cheats on a test resulting in him attending a school for gifted children-with embarassing results. Features some entertaining father/son action between Bart and Homer that is not present in later shows)
HOMER'S ODDYSEY (The dumb lazy Homer that we know and love gets himself fired from the Power Plant, but then is seen in a new light (unique to this episode) in being thoughtful and determined)
THERE'S NO DISGRACE LIKE HOME (Homer, again in a different role from later shows, is disgusted at his lazy family and tries to get them to love and bond, with quite disastrous results indicating that you can't interfere with the Simpsons!)
BART THE GENERAL (Taking scenes from films such as Patton and making them SImpsonesque is done elegantly as war rages in Springfield, with lots of great military scenes. The war itself is between Bart and the school bully, and is fought with water balloons!)
MOANING LISA (A thought provoking and sentimental episode with prodigal Lisa having the blues and questioning her existence in a fully serious manner. Contains some memorable moments, such as Lisa playing Saxophone on the bridge with Bleeding Gums Murphy, the blues man)
CALL OF THE SIMPSONS (Variety spices up this episode as the Simpsons travel on a camping trip into the forest, but lose their way. A bizarre sequence of events results in Homer being mistaken for Bigfoot! Well driven episode, with guest voice Albert Brooks)
THE TELLTALE HEAD (An interesting cross-cut episode which sees Bart wrestling with his conscience after some well-meaning bad advice from Homer. Real family issues and social problems are tackled in this Episode, and it has a very gripping narrative)
LIFE ON THE LAST LANE (Again, family issues are tackled when Marge meets another man whilst out bowling and an affair nearly ensures, whilst Homer is afraid he is losing his wife but enjoys quality time with the children)
HOMER'S NIGHT OUT (Beginning to look more like a modern episode, a drunken stag party for Homer to attend and a spy camera for Bart to use results in an torn marriage and a distressed Marge, and comically Homer is notorious throughout Springfield)
THE CREPES OF WRATH (A superb episode seeing Bart travel to France, and the SImpsons receiving an Albanian child. Bart is worryingly mistreated, and the varied setting and different languages make it very interesting)
KRUSTY GETS BUSTED (When Krusty the Klown gets arrested for armed robbery, only Bart Simpsons believes his innocence. He convinces Lisa, and they alone must convince the rest of the public just who REALLY had it in them to frame the loveable Clown. Very Witty and Very Clever plot.)
SOME ENCHANTED EVENING (In return for his many mistakes as a husband, Homer takes Marge out, leaving the SImpsons in the hands of a babysitter who turns out to be a con woman and a thief! Marvel and the Simpsons Kid's ingenuity to catch her, and cringe at Homer's hilarious stupiditiy of letting her go!)
A definite recommendation for Simpsons fanatics. Those casual viewers, I would recommend you look at other Seasons first.

as much as I love the Simpsons, recently (especially the really new episodes), it's lost some of it's humour. the first few series though, are absolute classics and I could easily watch them over and over again. Alex
