This is a video containing four great episodes from the hit cartoon series, The Simpsons! Four episodes based around a religious theme. The four episodes are Bart Sells His Soul, In Marge we Trust, Treehouse of Horror IV and Homer the Heretic. Here is a review of each of episodes and my opinion on this video as a whole.
Here are the lists of episodes with information about the story lines, original air dates, writers and directors of each of the episodes and my personal opinion on each. There are in order of how they appear on the video. They act as a memory refresher to those of you who have seen them and a taster for those of you who haven't.
[3F02] - Bart Sells His Soul Original Air Date: 8 Oct 95 Written By: Greg Daniels Directed By: Wesley Archer Story Line: Bart sells his soul to Milhouse for $5. Soon he finds that automatic doors won't open for him, the pets hiss at the sight of him and that he doesn't find Itchy and Scratchy funny any more. Meanwhile, Moe's had a brainwave. To boost trade he's converting his tavern into Uncle Moe's Family Feedbag. My Opinion: This is a great episode that has a few different story lines going on at one time. Bart's dream where he is missing his soul is a classic part in the early days of the Simpsons. This is one not to be missed.
[4F18] - In Marge We Trust Original Air Date: 27 Apr 97 Written By: Donick Carey Directed By: Steven Dean Moore Special Guest: Sab Shimono (Mr. Sparkle) Story Line: While Homer is horrified to find his face being used to advertise a Japanese cleaning powder. Marge calls Rev. Lovejoy's bluff and volunteers to take on his workload at the church to become the Listen Lady. My Opinion: This isn't one of my favourite episodes, but I would sit and watch it if it is playing on telly.
[1F04] - Treehouse of Horror IV Original Air Date: 28 Oct 93 Written By: Conan O'Brien, Bill Oakley, Josh Weinstein, Greg Daniels, Dan McGrath and Bill Canterbury Directed By: David Silverman Story Line: In 'The Devil and Homer Simpson', Homer makes a deal with Satan, his soul for a doughnut. 'Nightmare at 5ft' sees Bart's school bus menaced by a monster. 'Dracula' features Mr Burns as a vampire out for blood. My Opinion: I love the treehouse of horror episodes, they always bring something new and exciting to the Simpsons. It's the time when the Simpsons creators can just go wild and have totally out of control story lines. This is an episode that does just that. This is very entertaining.
[9F01] - Homer the Heretic Original Air Date: 8 Oct 92 Written By: George Meyer Directed By: Jim Reardon Story Line: Homer wants to avoid church, much to Marge's disgust. Homer receives a message from God in a dream that it is OK to skip church. With this message Homer goes by the rules of his own religion. My Opinion: Homer will do anything to get out of work! This is a great episode, and one I have seen dozen of times.
Conclusion **************** This is a video I have owned for a long time and is a very entertaining one containing some of the most memorable episodes that have been shown on TV. My little brother is always playing these episodes when he about to go to sleep. This video is of course, a video and it will never beat the sound and picture quality of a DVD, but it is well worth having it to watch the episodes. Some of the episodes can be found on the complete season's box sets that are now available, so it might be worth spending a little bit more to have more episodes, special features and quality viewing.
I received this video as part of a video club I had joined and I was paying around £13.99, and this was a few years ago. This is now available from lots of different places and at very good prices. I own a lot of videos and DVD's of the Simpsons and they all go great as part of a collection. I've said it before and I'll say it again, it pays to shop around!
