The Simpsons - Classics - Heaven and Hell is yet another of the 'classics' series of Simpsons DVD's. There are four episodes included here, each having something to do with heaven and the other place. They are "Bart Sells His Soul", "In Marge We Trust", "Treehouse Of Horror IV" and "Homer The Heretic".
In "Bart Sells His Soul", Bart sells his soul to Milhouse for 5 dollars after proclaiming they don't exist. He soon regrets the sale though, as his dog is very edgy towards him, automatic doors don't open for him anymore and Marge feel like he is missing something. In the end he gets it back from an unlikely source. A Bart-centric episode, it touches on what a soul is and how someone can possess such a thing. The Simpsons writers are excellent at trying to explain these things in a brilliantly comic way.
"In Marge We Trust" has Marge becoming a volunteer at Springfield church. Soon, she starts to counsel people on the phone as Reverend Lovejoy stopped caring long ago. Meanwhile, Homer finds a Japanese box at the dump with his face on it and investigates. Another good episode touching on faith in one way or another, it has Lovejoy regain the zest he used to have for helping people before he became apathetic, and we all need that sometimes.
"Treehouse Of Horror IV" has 3 scare-ific mini episodes for us. First, "The Devil and Homer Simpson", in which Homer sells his soul for a donut, then "Terror at 5 1/2 Feet" where a gremlin is wreaking havoc on the school bus and only Bart can save everyone inside, and finally "Bart Simpson's Dracula" in which Mr. Burns plays Dracula and the family join his for a dinner in Pennsylvania *Thunder*. I love the TOH episodes, the writers seem to put a special effort into these and it's fun to see different variations of the characters we love and all the different movie references. Probably one of my favourite episodes ever.
Finally "Homer The Heretic", another of my all time favourite episodes, has Homer skipping after he realizes he can get the whole house to himself. After having one of the best mornings of his life, he decides never to go to church again, to the shock of Marge. This episode really makes me smile, perhaps it's the amazing morning Homer has where everything just seems to be going perfectly for him, or maybe it's the religious angle, where Homer talks with god in his laid back sorta way, but I never tire of seeing it whenever it's on.
With no extras and at £12.99 from amazon, this is really not worth it, even though it has some of my favourite episodes on it, my advice is to buy the seasons instead. As always The Simpsons get a highly recommended from me!
