To try and put the greatest hits of The Simpsons onto one disc is foolhardy. There are so many classic, touching, hilarious episodes people love that if they did do a greatest hits package it would be so long that it wouldn't be able to fit on anyone's shelves, that is the quality of this show.
So this DVD, part of "The Simpsons Classics", contains 4 episodes, each accredited with some sort of landmark. We have "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", which was the very first episode and deals with Homer not getting his Christmas bonus, but in the end gets something much better. There's the 100th episode "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baddasssss Song" where Bart gets Principal Skinner when he brings Santa's Little Helper into school for show and tell day. There's also "Bart Gets an F" which had the highest ever ratings in America for a Simpsons episode. And finally, "Lisa's First Word" in which Maggie speaks for the first time. This is a really touching episode, and shows that the writers can do moving drama as well as comedy. When Homer lays Maggie down at the end, you can feel the love he has for her, and vice versa. But I could be reading too much into it.
It's interesting to look over different episodes from different times in The Simpsons history and see the changes in animation and writing. Like how in the early days Bart was the focal point of the family, with computer games and rap songs with him as the central character, but as the show went on focus was diverted to Homer, with his slapstick humour, his angry outbursts but always a loving father and husband who would do anything for his family.
If you can get this cheap then it would be a good deal, otherwise get a full season. These DVD's don't have any extras whereas the season boxsets have a wealth of different features and can be gotten relatively cheap.
Advantages: Great epsiodes, Its the simpsons! Disadvantages: Only 5 episodes on it
As the name of the DVD says, it's the Simpsons greatest hits. The episodes on the DVD are probably the most well known of them all and probably the most popular.
The episodes that are on it are:
-The Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire -Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadassss Song -Trash of the Titans -Bart gets an F -Lisa's first word. Information of the episodes and my opinions of each episode are below:
-The Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire:
This ... ...probably one of the best. So, the story is, Bart gets a tattoo, even though he was told not to, and Marge has to spend all of the Christmas money to get it removed, which leaves them with nothing, as Homer doesn't receive his Christmas bonus this year. So, after finding out that he wont be getting his bonus, Homer gets a job at a department store as Santa for the little kids. But he only receives $13, which leaves Christmas looking very dull for ...

DVD Description
This Simpsons collection features five of the series' watershed moments. "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire"--the episode that launched a thousand repeats--is the first ever Simpsons episode and the one that introduces the lovably dysfunctional clan to their soon-to-be family dog, Santa's Little Helper. In "Sweet Seymour Skinner's Baadasssss Song"--the series' 100th episode--Bart helps Principal Skinner get his job back after he's fired from the school. In "Trash of the Titans"--the series' 200th episode--Homer feuds with snooty garbagemen and transforms Springfield into an oozing trash heap. In "Bart Gets an F"--the episode with the highest U.S. ratings--Bart is forced to actually study (gulp) in order to pass history class. And in "Lisa's First Word," flashbacks reveal Bart and Lisa's early childhood...and Maggie speaks for the first time!
