As an adaptation of the Stephen King novel it was bound to disappoint some of the hardcore fans - the biggest alteration is the ending, which I shall not divulge, but offers up a much more psychologically chilling conclusion than the novel. Over all, however, the film is a veritable masterwork.
We are introduced to the Torrence family, who take up residence in an empty hotel over a particually harsh winter in order to maintain the grounds. Gradually the audience learns of the hotel's sinister past via a series of cues. Which slowly build throughout the film, leading to an edge-of-your-seat final sequence.
Kubricks aptitude for tension building presents itself full throttle in this movie. As we are lead throughout the weeks, seeing glimpses of the breakdown of the family unit, the mental instability of Jack, and the increasing ghostly experiences it would almost be a sigh of relief when the film finishes, if it wasn't so damn brilliant.
If you have an interest in film, this is definately one to check out, it showcases Kubricks innovative use of the steadicam, his love of near symetry, his long takes and his perfectionism. The is the auteur at his best.
If you want to see a great psychological horror, this is also perfect, slow tension building and intregue are in abundance. The only thing I would say against this film is that if you are a fan of hardcore horror, and you expect gore and plenty of out right scares, maybe this isn't for you. This horror doesnt rely on cheap thrills. It is a cold take on the nature of man and his downfall. It calls us to question how much of what we see is real? And it definately haunts you long after the credits have rolled.

I see you've posted this as a DVD review, but you've not mentioned the DVD features. Are there any extras? If so, what are they and are they any good? If you add to this, or if you change it to be posted as a "Film Only" review, which can be done by accessing "edit review" above the review and changing the drop down menu under the "Which format are you reviewing?" question at the bottom, please let me know and I'll re-rate.

I quite liked the movie, but it simply wasn't that scary. I didn't think so, anyway. A bit dated, perhaps..? -FT
