The Shinning is without a doubt one of the scariest movies you will ever watch! In a recent poll it was voted number one scariest moment in movies for the "heres.... jonny" scene.
STORY
A struggling author Jack Torrence (Jack Nicholson) takes a job as a caretaker at a hotel during its closed season. He brings his wife and child along with him. It's not long before the isolated hotel becomes the stuff nightmares are made of. Visitations from ghosts, a previous care taker who has killed his family on the grounds, and his son's physic powers start to take there toll on Jack and he goes just a wee bit crazy.
Based on a Steven King novel and directed by Stanley Kubrick, The shinning is a true horror masterpiece. Not only because of the great story and direction, but by riveting acting performances by Jack Nicholson, Shelly Duvall (Wife) and Danny Lloyd (Son). The real scare factor comes from not just the nightmarish visions that the family are witness but mainly from jack Nicholson's character's gradual decline into insanity. If you think of most horror films around today the killer is mostly some crazed killer / monster who hacks people up with a hook or a bloody great knife. The real scare here is that the killer is some one you love, your father, your husband, and they have switched from being that person you care about into some one you don't recognise anymore. Oh and they want to hack you up with a huge Axe! I have yet to see a film that really has the shinning beat on the scare factor. I had a friend over who had never seen this movie, we stuck it on. He didn't want to go home that night. I think if I pointed out the scariest bits I would ruin it for anyone who hasn't seen the movie, so instead I recommend you buy it / rent it and make your own mind up for yourself. Just don't watch it alone, late at night…. then again why not watch it by yourself, alone, when no one else is in the house! Just remember "All work and no play makes jack a dull boy"
EXTRAS
Not many extras, just the one "making of the Shinning documentary" with some good insight into how the movie was made
This is a true masterpiece, with a great story, superb acting, excellent direction and a chilling soundtrack. It can be purchased for very cheap now days and is another essential purchase to anyone's DVD collection. The only downside is that there aren't many extras on this DVD but who cares it's a great movie!
