Did anyone think Scream was scary? No? What a surprise I wonder why that was, maybe its because it was just a poor imitation of every other Horror film before it. These new teen slasherfests are badly made, scripted and acted and the only motivation I ever have to go and see them is to see what film they ripped off this time. The only truly original horror films are the old Dracula and Frankenstein movies of the thirties, they set the template and since then every other scary film has been a copy or a copy of a copy(which is even worse), whilst the original stalk n slash is a 60s film called Peeping Tom. Then we come to the totally insane, blood and guts movies like The Evil Dead and Hellraiser, which just get worse and worse, and although The Evil Dead is now a cult film it really is appallingly badly made.

The only horror films that I have ever been scared by are Event Horizon and Shining. Shining was made before the recent glut of teen slashers and comes from the book by Stephen King, which is his scariest apart from IT. Shining, originally called The Shining was made in 1980 by the late, great Stanley Kubrick, who could proudly say he’d never made a turkey. He died luckily before his last film Eyes Wide Shut came out and so he was spared seeing the carnage, as the film was cruelly mauled by audiences and critics alike.

Shining stars Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall as well as some kid whose name I forgot. The plot is simple but effective; a family go to live in a deserted hotel for the winter as the father is the caretaker. Nicholson plays the caretaker who is also trying to write a novel and Duvall plays his wife. Upon their arrival they meet Mr Halloran who hands over the keys and realises that Danny (Jacks son) is telepathic like him. Danny has an imaginary friend called Toby who can talk and shows Danny via his telepathic powers things he wants to see and things he doesn’t…….
The hotel is enormous, empty and deserted on the site of an ancient burial ground with a history of murder and the paranormal, and once only the family are left strange things start to happen. The tension builds as both father and son witness terrifying visions, and the hotel seems to posses a life and mind of its own. The final climax is truly horrific and will keep you nailed to your seat, as Nicholson cracks and delivers the best and most over the top performance of his career.

Duvall shines in her role, perfect has the bewildered wife desperately trying to understand the frightening situation. The photography is brilliant and sumptuous , the tension handled beautifully and the horror is conserved and used sparingly at the right moments. Kubrick achieves the idea of an abandoned, haunted hotel perfectly, refusing to overdo the horror and is never overcome with the urge to break out the Zombies and flickering lights. The film is extremely claustrophobic, with many shots of the long deserted corridors that increases the feeling of being trapped and alone, and the desolate location of the hotel which becomes snowed in is perfect. Bits to look out for include the famous “Here’s Johnny!”Scene, the elevator scene and the woman in the bath. The true terror that Shining achieves so easily has never been repeated by another horror movie, and recent haunted house films such as House on Haunted Hill and The Haunting fall way short of the mark.

Don’t think that just because it was made in 1980 that it will be boring and not scary, remember; Kubrick was a master and if he wanted you to be scared then believe me, as Yoda once said “You will be,…. You will be”.

I have to agree with you. Im a big horror fan especially the old classics. Chainsaw, halloween, friday etc etc. This has to be one of the best horror films for nail biting, hiding behind a cushion or looking through your hands with one eye. I dont usually get scared when watching horror flicks but i still dont like watching this film on my own. The worse part about it are the twins and especially the scene where hes riding his tricycle on and off the carpet then goes round the corner. Mucho scary

Good written review :) The first time I saw this film was a few years ago and I see why it has become such a classic.
