...a film and directed by the late and great Stanley Kubrick? *The Film. Jack Torrance is a writer; facing a bit of a mental block at the moment, and suffering from a cash flow problem. Wendy is his wife; she's not too pretty, has a penchant for lank hair and opening her eyes too wide. Danny is their son; he talks to his imaginary friend who lives in his finger. Jack gets a break, and is hired as a winter caretaker for the gargantuan Overlook hotel, ... ...off; Wendy hoping to spend the next five months in tranquil solitude, Jack aspiring to write his long awaited novel in such peaceful surroundings. They arrive and are shown around the vast and splendid hotel. Wendy gets a long and intricate tour of the kitchen, checking out the storage and refrigeration systems (remember that, it might be important). The cook takes a shining (no pun intended) to Danny, and shares a few psychic moments with him, warning ...

Advantages: Jack Nicholson is fantastic as a maniac! Disadvantages: The acting can be a little 'forced'
Adapted from the book of the same title written by stephen king, this is a classis film directed by Stanley Kubrick (Eyes Wide Shut). This is the first adaptation of the Shining, as it was adapted as a tv mini-series in the 1990s. I got this from my local shop for £5 in their discount box and remembered watching it years ago and decided to get it to see if it was as good as I remembered. I was not disappointed!

Advantages: Jack Nicholson at his very best...and worst!!! Disadvantages: Just a tiny bit slow to start with
...bit creepy and unstable at the best of times. Even in comedy roles he always gives the impression that the characters he plays could always "FREAKOUT!!!" at the flick of a switch. I truly believe that there is this little bit of madness that resides in our old friend Jack and I believe that Stanley Kubrick detected this when he cast Nicholson for the role of Jack Torrence, the unstable and ever maddening caretaker of the Overlook Hotel. Its a pity ... ...and haunted dwelling.
Picture the scene...haunted hotel, a history of madness linked to cabin fever and a former caretaker slaughtering his own family with an axe. I'm not being funny but If I was interviewing someone for a caretakers position, knowing the history of the hotel and that the only people who would keep our Jack company were a bulging eyed wife and a creepy floppy haired kid intent on talking to his own finger, I would somehow pass ...

Advantages: one of the best horror films ever Disadvantages: None
...made, scripted and acted and the only motivation I ever have to go and see them is to see what film they ripped off this time. The only truly original horror films are the old Dracula and Frankenstein movies of the thirties, they set the template and since then every other scary film has been a copy or a copy of a copy(which is even worse), whilst the original stalk n slash is a 60s film called Peeping Tom. Then we come to the totally insane, blood ... ...worse and worse, and although The Evil Dead is now a cult film it really is appallingly badly made.
The only horror films that I have ever been scared by are Event Horizon and Shining. Shining was made before the recent glut of teen slashers and comes from the book by Stephen King, which is his scariest apart from IT. Shining, originally called The Shining was made in 1980 by the late, great Stanley Kubrick, who could proudly say he’d never ...

Genre: Horror
Classification: 18 years and over
Production Year: 1980
Running Time: 1 hour 54 minutes
Video Category: Feature Film
Country Of Origin: United States of America
Plot: Opening with spectacular aerial shots of a beautiful, mountainous landscape, Stanley Kubrick's horror classic THE SHINING, based on Stephen King's best-selling novel, sucks the viewer into his frightening tale with quiet, relaxing visuals - but the ominous soundtrack warns that all is not right at the gorgeous Overlook Hotel. Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson at his eyebrow-raising best), a Vermont schoolteacher, accepts a job as the winter caretaker of the glorious early-20th-century resort that operates only in warm weather because the snowy roads deny access in the colder months. Jack brings his wife, Wendy (Shelley Duvall), with him, as well as his young son, Danny (Danny Lloyd)--who brings with him a little boy named Tony who lives in his mouth. As the Torrances settle in for the long, lonely months ahead, strange, unexplainable things start occurring in the hotel--and in every scene Jack seems to be growing a little more evil and dangerous... With superb camerawork (the Steadicam follows the evil through narrow hallways and ornate rooms), extraordinary sound detail (the scene in which Danny rides his Big Wheel across the Overlook's hardwood and carpeted floors is an aural classic), and a terrifying score (based on the work of Bela Bartok), THE SHINING is an unforgettable masterpiece, a psychological supernatural thriller featuring outstanding performances from Nicholson and Duvall--and a cast of dead twin girls and suicidal ax-murdering ghosts, among other bloodcurdling figures.
