dog and back again in this fresh update of the Disney comedy classic. It all begins when workaholic D.A. Dave Douglas (Allen) takes on a case involving an animal laboratory - one that will take him away yet again from his wife (Davis) and kids who already yearn for his all too distracted attention. But when Dave is accidentally infected with a top secret genetic-mutation serum everything he thought he knew about being himself and his family changes. Yet with his newly perked up ears and his front row seat on the household carpet Dave is able to gain a whole new perspective into his family's secrets and dreams. Now he wants nothing more than to stop fetching and return to fathering - only first he'll have to stop the evil forces behind the serum...in an adventure that will bring the whole family together. The Pacifier (Dir. Adam Shankman) (2005): Vin Diesel stars as Navy SEAL Shane Wolfe who as an elite member of the world's fiercest and most highly trained force thought he was prepared to take on any duty no matter how perilous or impossible... until he tried baby-sitting. Assigned to protect the five out-of-control children of an assassinated scientist working on vital government secrets Shane is suddenly faced with juggling two outrageously incompatible jobs: fighting the bad guys while keeping house. Replacing his usual arsenal of wetsuits and weapons with diapers and juice boxes Shane not only must battle a deceptive enemy but wrangle teen rebel Zoe (Brittany Snow) sullen 14 year-old Seth (Max Theriot) 8 year-old Ninja-wanna-be Lulu (Morgan York) as well as 3 year-old Peter and baby Tyler - not to mention their off-beat Romanian nanny (Carol Kane). But while drop zones demolitions and destroying enemy targets come naturally to Shane he has no idea what tough really is until he pits his courage against diapering den-mothering and driver's education. He's truly a SEAL out of water and now it's up to this one-time lone warrior to take on the most important mission of his life: keeping a family together!

In 1959, having had huge success with its animations, and its two previous ventures into live action film, Disney decided to depart from well known book adaptations and film a completely original live action comedy. based upon a little known book by one Felix Salten The timing and cast they chose could not have been better. Fred MacMurray's was a well recognised star whose career had hit a quiet spell, Jean Hagen's was going through a run of guest-spots-on-TV-shows-itis , and Tommy Kirk and Annette Funicello were both well known to young fans of the Mickey Mouse Club, and just the right age to play the parts needed. Nor was it a bad career move from the actors, MacMurray was launched into icon status shortly after with his role in TV classic My Three Sons and Funicello went on to beach babe movie history. With the known faces of veteran actors and a solid script, and the same meticulous attention to detail in regards to special effects as previously seen in 20,000 leagues Under the Sea, it was no surprise when it wowed critics and movie goers alike. Seemingly strangely, given the fact that the two previous live action films were in colour, this one was shot in black and white, as were several other films after it. Given that this film and those after it were very heavy on the special effects and the much higher cost of colour film in the past, I feel I should mention here it was likely due to budget constraints, with 20,000 leagues and Treasure Island being filmed in britain where the costs were lower due to the post-war debt-credit system. Despite the American black and white film effort, this went on to become a family favourite that transcended the generation gap, going on to endear itself to another generation during the 1970's as it was shown on the TV series The Wonderful World of Disney.
The story itself is a simple one. Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) is your nice average American kid who is trying to come to grips with the changes in his life being a teenager brings. He comes across a ring and reads the inscription upon it, only to discover to his great discomfiture that he has jinxed himself. For the inscription is an incantation, one that turns the victim into a large sheepdog. he is relieved to turn back into himself, only to be further dismayed when it transpires that the jinx is still active, and turns him into a dog at the most inopportune moment. If that was not bad enough, he crosses paths with spies out to derail America's space efforts and only he can stop. There are plenty of laughs along the way as we watch Wilby struggle to normalise his life and avoid the fate of being Elwood the Dog. His angst in his emotional dealings with his parents (MacMurray and Hagen), to his teenaged Lothario efforts (with Funicello and Franceska Andrassy), make this film a delight in a timeless manner.
While the humour of inherent in the story may seem slapstick, it is not pie in your face silly. rather the gag is one that actually works as a plot device. It drives the story forward, and this is important because the film is not just a string of gags. The plot itself is detailed and the characters very three dimensional, making this a quality film that happens to be rather slapstick in premise, as opposed to being a mere running joke tied together with a few bits of dialogue. I have to mention the special effects again here. Just as the miniatures used in their classic 20,000 leagues were done so meticulously as to even today ot appear to be models, so the effects relating to the dog in this film were crafted. It actually appears that the DOG is doing all those things. years before modern CGI, this is no mere "get a a guy in a rented dog suit" hat trick, nor is it a mere cheesy, "let's just sit the dog there in one pose and pretend not to notice the steering wheel is not moving" type effect. Where the effects ARE let down is in some of the scenery, where it is obvious that it is filmed background scenery, but that was a standard conceit that continued well into the 70's and is even seen on television today when filming people in cars. It is therefore a niggle that is easy to live with.
Forty-eight years later, and nearly twenty years since its TV appearance heyday, how does this film play to modern youngsters? My teenage children howled with laughter, and wanted to invite friends over to watch it, and when they did, it was again favourably received despite their initial surprise at being shown a black and white film. The 5 and 3 year old also were enraptured, though the five year old did comment it was a shame it was not in colour, but this was an afterthought. Both young children sat through with rapt attention, and with a demand to watch the Shaggy DA for more "funny dog". I have to say, judging by this reaction, that the film is one to be added to the family shelf. Forget ridiculous remakes with questionable humour and blighted storylines, watch the original and the best.
As for getting it, the original black and whiteversion is out there on DVD, just look at the production year to ensure you are getting the 1959 version rather than the terrible Tim Allen remake. It is a budget release DVD,fully remastered for clear picture and sound, but with fullscreen presentation rather than the original widescreen aspect ratio, and comes in English only without subtitles or any kind of extras. That said, at under £6, you won't find better laughs to share with your kids even if you spend more money on a more exspensive DVD.
Advantages: Some nice ideas Disadvantages: Decidedly average all round
...Blues" hack-for-hire Brian Robbins fits the Disney director mould well. He is happy to produce utterly inoffensive material that will sit happily with Middle America's family values. The visuals are crisp and clean and Robbins direction is workmanlike but never creates spectacle. It is focussed more on the family morality (kids need fathers that listen to them) than the man-turns-into-dog frolics. So what could have been a thrill-a-minute junior ... ...definitely been cut to keep the movie well within budget. This is especially true when it comes to effects. Hopes are high when Dave is first bitten and you see furry dog genes rushing into his bloodstream "Fantastic Voyage" style. But you never get the wished-for bells and whistles transformation from man to dog. The rest of the effects are a little bit iffy, like the mutant animals in the scientists' lab. They don't look quite right because they ...

Right! everything you have just read in around two minutes, takes the film about 30 to explain. ...as there is not only the comic humour expected for children, but there are plots which may be seen as amusing, and understood better by adults as well! The characters are loveable, and it is clear to see who are the baddies and who are the goodies! The animals in particular are very well trained and make a really lovely addition to the film. Tim Allen is, as always, very funny, and portrays his character well. The cast is very well known, and there ...

Filled with impossible situations and hilarious gags, this comic allegory follows the adventures of Wilby Daniels (Tommy Kirk) after he finds an ancient mysterious ring and unintentionally casts a hex on himself and turns into a huge sheepdog. The only other odd thing is that Wilby still has his voice intact. Back and forth he goes, constantly changing from the pooch to his human self. While this amuses his brother, it positively amazes his neighbours, the local police, and a brunette beauty on his street. As if his bad hair days weren't enough, Wilby soon learns that a group of spies has moved into the neighbourhood. This initially bad news might turn into his chance to perform a final heroic act that could free him from the spell altogether. The resulting comedy is a well-tailored adolescent romp directed with great pacing by Charles Barton.

Good dog. With a couple of priceless scenes as a prosecutor trying desperately to contain his inner canine, Tim Allen turns what could have been an obligatory revisiting into something worth seeing (New York Times, )
DVD Description
Directed by Brian Robbins (VARSITY BLUES, THE PERFECT SCORE), this updated spin on THE SHAGGY DOG and THE SHAGGY D.A. features Tim Allen as Dave Douglas, a Deputy District Attorney who spends way too much time at the office and way too little time with his family. His son, Joe (Spencer Breslin), feels completely misunderstood, and his wife, Rachel (Kristin Davis), feels like a single parent. To make matters worse, his teenage daughter, Carly (Zena Gray), considers Douglas the enemy because he is representing a pharmaceutical company, Grant and Strickland, in their case against her social studies teacher, who is accused of burning down their lab to protest animal testing. Douglas' life changes in an instant when animal-loving Carly brings home a friendly shaggy dog that bites the dog-disliking D.A. What Douglas doesn't know is that the dog has a secret. This Tibetan wonder dog is 300 years old, as smart as a human, and as playful as a pup. Soon, Douglas is exhibiting canine tendencies himself - a heightened sense of smell, a tendency to growl at opposing counsel in court, and an overwhelming urge to defend his front yard. His full transformation to a dog allows him rare insight into what his family really thinks and feels, and gives Douglas the opportunity to decide what is truly important. To further complicate matters, Grant and Strickland - the very company Douglas is representing - are certain that the dog that bit him holds the secret to the Fountain of Youth, and are determined to learn what it is. Robert Downey, Jr. stars as Dr. Kozak, Grant and Strickland's evil mastermind, and Philip Baker Hall plays head honcho Strickland. Jane Curtin and Danny Glover are also featured.
