the legendary Sinbad sets off on a dangerous journey to the mysterious Island of Colossus. His quest is to break the spell cast over his beloved princess by a diabolical magician. But before he can save her Sinbad must battle an awesome collection of mythical monsters - the man-eating Cyclops a saber-wielding skeleton a ferocious two-headed bird called the Roc and a fire-breathing dragon. The 7th Voyage of Sinbad still looks as dazzling today as when it was first released with Ray Harryhausen's 'eye popping' special effects still capable of taking your breath away. The DVD also includes over 80 minutes of special features including a documentary and three featurettes. The Golden Voyage Of Sinbad: A spectacular adventure set in mysterious ancient lands inhabited by incredible creatures and monsters. Sinbad - Prince of Baghdad and legendary sailor - finds an intriguing map and sets sail for the previously uncharted island of Lemuria with a beautiful slave girl Margianna and the Grand Vizier of the land of Marabia in an adventure that sees Sinbad explore uncharted waters and do battle with the evil Prince Koura and many mythical beasts. Sinbad And The Eye Of The Tiger: Sinbad (Patrick Wayne) daring sailor and Prince of Bagdad sets sail towards Charnak seeking permission from Prince Kassim to woo his sister Farah (Jane Seymour). But Sinbad discovers that Kassim has been placed under a spell by their fiendish stepmother (Margaret Whiting). To break the wicked spell Sinbad must set forth on a journey unlike any ever traveled. Awaiting him on this perilous voyage is an assortment of beasts beyond one's wildest imagination. Among the creatures encountered are the Minoton a bronze colossus; a giant troglodyte; a saber-toothed tiger; and an "almost human" baboon. The incredible animated special effects by Ray Harryhausen will leave you spellbound as you sail with this Sinbad classic.

one of Hollywood's first modern fantasy action blockbusters. On a mission to rescue his fiancée, the Princess Parisa (Kathryn Grant), Kerwin Mathews acquits himself well as Sinbad, while Torin Thatcher is a suitably malevolent magician who has shrunken the princess in a bid to get Sinbad to undertake a perilous quest. Truth be told, no one remembers Ray Harryhausen films for the script or the acting; the real stars are the still impressive action set-pieces, a battle with a cyclops, a giant Roc, a dragon, and a duelling skeleton; this last anticipating a much more lavish battle with skeleton warriors inJason and the Argonauts. The cast may be all-American rather than Arab but even so, everything about this film works, from the fabulous set design of the Sultan's palace which evokes a real fairytale atmosphere, to Bernard Herrmann's truly classic score. On the DVD: The film exhibits a strong anamorphically enhanced 1.85-1 ratio image, with powerful mono sound. At about 80 minutes, the extras last almost as long as the movie. The most important and extensive addition is "The Harryhausen Chronicles", a documentary, while "This is Dynamation" gives an introduction to the stop-motion animation process itself. Ray Harryhausen is an affable host, a modest man who talks engagingly about his work in a way that really makes one appreciate the sheer ingenuity and skill which went into making not justThe Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, but alsoJason and the Argonauts, the subject of a further featurette on the disc. On top of this there are trailers for the aforementioned films, plus one for the disappointing but still funGolden Voyage of Sinbad. Overall, a first-class film on an equally good DVD.--Gary S. Fantasy, Adventure, Hero's, Villains and Monsters… What more could you ask for. What is it about these fantasy films, I loved them as a child and now I'm an adult (well almost) I love them still. The mythic storyline, the battle between good and evil, it's about as much adventure I could get as a child. Sitting in front of the TV wide-eyed and mesmerised, ahh those were the days of innocence.
Anyway back to the film. This was a major release in Hollywood, one of the first modern fantasy films, in superb Technicolor. The film starts with Sinbad lost at sea in a thick mist. He spies an island through the fog and when they set down to stock up on supplies, all of a sudden a man comes running towards then, chased by a giant Cyclops. After a hasty departure they find the man to be a sorcerer who was trying to steal a magic lamp from the Cyclops. He begs Sinbad to return to the island, but is disappointed with Sinbad's refusal. On their return to Baghdad the sorcerer casts a spell on the Princess Parisa, the soon-to-be wife of Sinbad, shrinking her to a tiny size. This has our hero sent on a treacherous mission to save her. This sorcerer's evil plan is to make Sinbad undergo a dangerous quest back to the Island of Colossa, and the layer of the menacing Cyclops. Much peril and treachery await Sinbad on this voyage, and will he conquer all to save the woman he loves.
The best thing about this film is the outstanding effects (well they were at that time) of Ray Harryhausen. In all the films he has done his effects and imagination outshine any story or script for any film. His creations of the Cyclops, the battle with the dragon and of course the battle between Sinbad and the Skeleton, which indicates a beginning to the unforgettable scene in Jason and the Argonauts. Harryhausen's Dynamation gave way to amazing stop-motion animation, and the ability to make fantasy come onto the big screen.
The extras on this DVD are mostly documentary's detailing the making of the film. In particular the work carried out by Ray Harryhausen. The main addition is "The Harryhausen Chronicles", a documentary of Harryhausen himself. Giving details of how he started and how he does the things he can do.
"This is Dynamation" is an introduction to the Stop-Motion animation process used in the film. This is presented by Ray Harryhausen who describes his work in a very modest way. It gives you a fascinating insight into the process, it also shows some of the work he has done in other films.
There are also trailers for some of the films Harryhausen has worked on. Even though the extras revolve around Harryhausen they are wonderful to watch and last nearly as long as the film itself.
All together this is a must for any DVD collection. For about £18 this can be bought from any retailer and is worth all the money spent on it. A fantasy film that cannot be faulted anywhere. OK so the effects are not as good as modern films, and some of the acting is a bit shoddy, but this was made in 1958 and has aged extremely well. I fully recommend this for all the family to enjoy.
Advantages: Enjoyable, colourful fantasy romp. Superb stop motion Disadvantages: None
...opportunity of paying homage to the magnificent Ray Harryhausen who's breathtaking stop motion work is displayed at it's best in this fine adventure movie. This movie along with Jason & the Argonauts and Jack the Giant Killer always used to be on TV at easter or the summer holidays when I was a kid and when I saw what he did that's all I wanted to do for a living. When you bare in mind that every movement is one 24th of a second and the creature ...

Review of The Seventh Voyage Of Sinbad (DVD)
An adventure for the ages. Forget that this film was done in 1958, it will still awe the most jaded viewer. This is Ray Harryhausen's very best work. The stop-motion effects are awesome. But, even with all of the eye candy, it's a great story brought to life by fine, serious performances by Kerwin Matthews, Kathryn Grant-Crosby, and especially by Torin Hatcher who has to be the creepiest and most evil villain there is on celluloid - including Darth ...

...watch over and over again. The animation isn't up to today's standards maybe, but that gives it it's charm. And considering it was made in 1958 you can't ask for anything more.
The myths and saga's turn these films into a cult movie which I always tend to associate with the holiday periods, Christmas, Easter etc.
Do get this on Video for a perfect lazy Sunday afternoon on the sofa. An older generation, say those of 23 upwards and young kids too, ...

Along the way Sinbad, Parisa, and their magical genie encounter a calvacade of mythological creatures, including a man-eating cyclops, a two headed roc, a fire breathing dragon, and a reanimated skeleton--all loving brought to life through the magic of the spectacular special effects of Ray Harryhausen.
