Wes Craven (A Nightmare on Elm Street) directs this terrifying story of one man's nightmarish journey into the eerie and deadly world of voodoo. Bill Pullman (Spaceballs, Independence Day) stars as a Harvard anthropologist who is sent to Haiti to retrieve a strange powder that is said to have the ability to turn people into zombies. In his quest for the drug the cynical scientist enters the rarely seen netherworld of the walking dead, blood rites and ancient curses.
Not your typical zombie movie, "The Serpent and the Rainbow" features "Real-life" zombies, who aren't your average brain craving, flesh-eaters, but are instead human vegetables under the influence of drugs. This may sound a little boring…and it is, but its not all that bad…Ok so it is.
One tiny quibble that I have is that director Wes Craven seems to be more interested in putting across the facts of the true story rather than the horror. Having said this there are a few terrifying moments, including the scene where Pullman is buried alive with a huge tarantula on his face. Oh and there is the scene when poor old Bill gets his scrotum nailed to a chair. Of course we don't get the pleasure of seeing this but I guess it's the thought that counts right?
All in all this is an average horror movie. If you can manage to sit through the first half-hour it does get better. Honest. And if you're not careful you may even learn something too.
