The Score undoubtedly wins the unnecessary film award and deserves to be remembered only for bringing together the three best method actors of their generations, namely; Brando, De Niro and Norton. I call the film unnecessary, because why on earth do we need another crime/thriller movie with Brando or De Niro when we already have The Godfather, Casino and Goodfellas to name a few. The Score just covers old ground and doesn’t even do it that well anyway, with both stars doing similar roles in better movies. Edward Norton is the only actor with an argument for being in this film, and even he is already worthy of better things than shoddy heist movies. For Gods sake! the guy was in Fight Club and American History X, he doesn’t have to appear in this shameless showcase of talent.
The Score is basically just a distant cousin of The Usual Suspects and Entrapment with a few adjustments and disguised stereotypes, such as De Niros expert, no-nonsense thief who will do ‘just one more job’. Ronin anyone? What about Norton’s fake cripple Brian, or should I say Keyser Soze? Did the scriptwriter really think no one would make any connections with any other famous films concerning intricately plotted thefts? The plot is borrowed or just plain stolen clap- trap about a priceless sceptre and the three experts who plan to nick it, they set up a fool proof plan but as always something goes wrong…
Robert De Niro stars as the old pro, close to retirement who is coaxed by his old partner in crime (Marlon Brando) into doing one last job. All is going well until De Niro meets his new associate Ed Norton, who worries him with his eager recklessness, but eventually wins him over thanks to his knowledge of the buildings interior. What follows the set up is a riveting and utterly engrossing theft and finale, but unfortunately you have to sit through an hour of mindless ‘crook dialogue’ to get there. All the details of the plan wouldn’t have been so hard to listen to if it weren’t for Brando. Can’t someone get him a speech therapist or something? He sounds like he’s trying to swallow a spoon of peanut butter, God only knows what early takes must have been like… Brando: “I wanyu ta thteal me a theptre, Ok?” De Niro: You talkin to me? Basically every element of The Score is found within another movie, and despite some great set pieces the whole thing is stilted and lacks the pace required to keep us interested. The film is sloppily directed with the action held back until the end, and characters that feel half- baked at best. Whilst Norton’s performance is at least energetic and powerful, De Niro and Brando rarely rise above lazy and are content to mumble as they simply repeat past roles. Coupled with a dire script and an unlikely, though exciting plot The Score falls way short of a mark it should easily clear. Though you may think it interesting to see three legends together on screen, you will still be bored witless after 30 minutes and by the time Brando starts slurring you’ll be begging for mercy. Always appreciate comments!

Highly amusing and entertaining op, Will. Love the Brando-De Niro outtake! ;0) I think we're on the same lines here, welcome to the JB CoT! JB

I was looking forward to this film , but I've heard very mixed reviews. Apparently Brando was a very hard to work with on set. A pioty to see such talent wasted. Good review. Thanks..

again a fab opinion. although to be fair i didn't expect anything original or ground breaking. i just figured it would be done better if done by the greats. Still want to see this movie though, but again will heed your advice. Cheers. Dx
