Advantages: Contemorary British subject Disadvantages: Could be seen to be a boring film by future generATIONS
I had this one on my selection from easy cinema for a while. There was so much publicity surrounding the film including HelenMirren winning an oscar I could not miss it.
The film is basicaly about Tony Blairs confrontation with the royal family about the way in which affairs of state should be handled. The issue is that of Princess Diana's funeral and how it should be presented to the public. In fact a lot more is at stake, Tony is newly elected and he sees his popularity as being very important to his public image. The film opens with Tony being newly elected and his first meeting with the Queen which is more or less a disaster for Tony as he does not seem to be treated with much respect.

Advantages: A glossy and mildly-diverting thriller Disadvantages: The film is superficial and predictable
In the mid-1990s film-directors Ron Howard and Mel Gibson must have felt quietly satisfied as they sailed along serenely in the same boat. Howard's tribute to all-American pluck, Apollo 13, and Gibson's tribute to all-American fantasy, Braveheart, had both picked up Oscars (the first, understandably; the second, perplexingly) and when the pair teamed up for a new project there was little doubt that fashion and momentum would propel them onward to another big pay-day. Ransom - directed by Howard and starring Gibson - was, predictably, a box-office smash and a critical triumph.
The film is a reworking of an old 1950s pot-boiler, Ransom! (the latter's scriptwriters get the story credit in this updated remake), and exploits that most fertile of plot devices, the kidnapping. Cue much huddling around telephones, sweating, swearing ...

Advantages: Superb script and acting, challenging your views, simply fantastic Disadvantages: Some scenes are just speculative
I was quite shocked to see that ITV were screening the Oscar winning movie "TheQueen" already on Sunday night, so I knew I had to tune in to see what all the fuss was about. As you may or may not know, The Queen won lead actress Helen Mirren an Oscar, a Golden Globe, a BAFTA, a Screen Actors Guild Award and an Award at the Venice Film Festival for being the Best Actress, along many others both for Helen Mirren, and the film was a whole. It has been hugely successful, and because of this I was thoroughly looking forward to seeing what all the fuss was about!
The film shows us the events from when Tony Blair was elected as Prime Minister in 1997, to the death of Princess Diana at the end of August 1997. It focuses on the backlash that came about against the Queen when she did not appear to speak publicly on the Princess' untimely death ...
