...I have always loved war films, and since Saving Private Ryan, the films coming out of Hollywood are now concentrating more on the actual realism of war as opposed to the Rose tinted view we used to get with films such as The Longest Day, Where Eagles dare and the likes.
Enemy at the Gates is a true story of the life of Russian Hero Vassili Zaitsef a poor farmer turned infantryman in the Second World War.
The film focuses on Vassili's first taste of combat and his subsequent successes in the fight for Stalingrad during the very bleak winter of 1942/43. Stalingrad was one of the most brutal and devastating battles of the second world war and was in many ways the turning point for the defeat of Hitler, as his forces over committed themselves on the vast Eastern Front.

...i know strictly speaking this review is only for volume 2 but as i did not buy the box set and got the world at war in 5 seperate parts. I have combined my review.

This is the definitive collection of documentaries from WWII. Coming to us more than 30 years after it was initially broadcast. It is narrated by academy award winner, Sir Lawrence Olivier.
I bought all 5 volumes from retrowarez-promotions on ebay. Priced at £6.79 each with £2 postage.
Volume 1 runs for 417 minutes, and features archival footage from 1933-1942 doocumenting the rise of the Nazis in Germany. And the start of the war. It also includes the making of. And more.
Volume 2 features archival footage fro 1939 –1944 and documents the Russian victories and the bombing raids in England. It runs for 432 minutes. And more.

Advantages: Very good acting, characters, plot, effects, etc... Disadvantages: Might not appeal to you if you don't like war films.
...Contrary to our views in the West, the Second World War was not won solely by Britain and America. Of the entire German Army at this time, two out of every three soldiers fought and often died on the Russianfront, and it could be argued that the Soviets are (ironically) the true savours of Western democracy. Given, then, that the RussianFront was host to some of the largest, most horrific battles in history, it’s incredible that there are only a tiny number of war films based on some aspect of it.
So, needless to say the prospect of a big budget film based on a duel of snipers during the Battle of Stalingrad (one of the most pivotal battles of the war, even of the whole of history) was intriguing. One of the most notable aspects of the film (which, obviously many people have already noted…) is the almost universal...
