It appears Disney have had the monopoly on Kid’s DVD releases of late with acclaimed picture and sound transfers of such great films as Toy Story and Fantasia 2000. Paramount issued a DVD last year that could provide a real alternative to the Disney catalogue with Rugrats: The Movie. This particular franchise has already been developed to produce a sequel, ‘The Rugrats in Paris’, which will arrive at British cinemas shortly.
The Rugrats Movie will be familiar to anyone who has ever watched the long running Nickelodeon TV Series. All the regular characters are here but the storyline is much, much stronger than the usual 30 minute outing. The film is 77 minutes long and introduces another baby boy to the pickles family. There is a sub-plot concerning the ‘bonding’ between the established character, Tommy Pickles, and the baby but the main adventure has the Rugrats getting lost in a forest and their respective families trying to rescue them. Despite it’s short running time this movie rolls along at a fair old pace and will make compulsive viewing for it’s young audience.
A good movie does not always make for a good DVD, see my review on the Dumbo Region 2 release for evidence of that! However, I am pleased to say the Rugrats DVD is a delight. The picture is framed in an anamorphic 1.85:1 widescreen format which means it will fill your widescreen TV and have fabulous resolution and colours. Most modern animations will tend to produce a good picture as the colours are easily tweaked before transfer and the source material is often produced in a digital form compatible with the eventual DVD format. The animation itself is not as smooth as some of the more expensive Disney releases but it is by no means shoddy. The additional money made available to make the Movie means the film has a thumping soundtrack not normally found on the TV series. This is well carried by the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and the dance music numbers really work the lower frequencies, particularly good news for owners of sub-woofers or big floor-standers. Extra features are a bit sparse but they do include a short ‘Catdog’ cartoon as well as the obligatory trailer. Certainly with kid’s DVDs I always appreciate the inclusion of some shorter cartoons and it is something that Disney could, and should, do but don’t.
If your children have any interest in the TV show then this DVD is of top quality. It has few extras but then you should be able to find it at a price cheaper than most Disney releases. The RRP is £18.99 but many high street shops have recently offered it for as little as £9.99.

great op on a new product.. the saying that a good movie doesn't necessarily become a good dvd sounds familiar! lol.. cheers :)

I went to see this at the cinema with my girlfriend. Well, it's for big kids too :-). I don't follow the series but I enjoyed the film (oh no there goes my street cred).

Advantages: cute and wonderfully told.. an improvement on the first film. Disadvantages: the do-good endings always seem to make me squerm... but that's just a minor flaw.
