This cult movie is an imaginative pastiche of well recognized horror, sci-fi and B-Movies, sinfully blended with comedy and rock music.
It tells the story of recently engaged Brad Majors and Janet Weiss whose car breaks down in the middle of no where. They call upon the home of sweet transvestite Dr. Frank 'N' Furter for help, and are invited to witness the unveiling of his latest creation Rocky Horror. However not everything goes to plan...
"The Rocky Horror Picture Show", adapted from the original stage play by Richard O'Brien, is recognized as a movie which encourages its audience to get involved. Many of its fans go dressed up, week after week to yell "Audience Participation" lines, throw rice and toast and sing along with the songs. So what's the attraction?
I myself am a big fan of this movie and have experienced it both in the theater as well as at home on video. I think it's a combination of Richard O'Brien's clever writing, as well as the atmosphere when seeing it with an audience at the theatre, that draws people time and again. But the superb performances from each of the cast are also sure to appeal to the audience.
Who could fail to be blown away by Tim Curry's gender bending portrayal of Dr. Frank 'N' Furter? He has a certain way with the camera, which makes him a joy to watch. Richard O'Brien, Patricia Quinn and Little Nell give equally unique performances as Riff Raff, Magenta and Columbia, which manage to mesmerize me each time I watch this movie. Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon are totally believable as the naive Brad and Janet, who are finally 'educated' by Frank. Peter Hinwood plays the forlorn Rocky Horror, with a notable element of innocence. Meatloaf makes a stunning, if a little brief appearance as Eddie, the ex-delivery boy. His performance of "Hot Patooti" is surely one of the highlights of the film. Jonathon Adams is amusing as Dr. Everett Von Scott (shame about the accent though!) and finally the late Charles Grey is wonderful at setting the scene as The Criminologist.
The extras on this 2 disk DVD set are very enjoyable - particularly the audio commentary by Richard O'Brien and Patricia Quinn. The Rocky Horror Video Show documentary takes a satisfying look at the creation of the film istelf, featuring interviews with the people who made it all happen. Although there are some nice little cast and crew interviews and other little extras that give the viewer a different look at the whole Rocky Horror phenomenon, it still doesn't provide enough exclusive 'behind the scenes' info.
I love everything about this movie - the music, the costumes, the directing - all are fabulous. There could have been room for improvement, had the budget been bigger and time more plentiful. However I think it is a charming little film, that although not a huge success when first released, will continue its current success far into the future! I recommend it to all!
