One of my favourite films of all time has to be ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’. It is now nearly thirty years old and yet I find the issues it creates are as relevant today as they were in the early 1970’s. It is a stereotyped science fiction movie, portrayed in a format, which is very ‘tongue in cheek’. ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ combines comic humour with a classic Gothic horror story, Frankenstein: Gothic meets the twenty-second century! In a fifties sci-fi film genre.
**History**
‘The Rocky Horror Show’ was originally designated as a piece of experimental theatre in a small London Theatre. Richard O’Brien (Crystal Maze) created this play, the book, music and lyrics and Michael White produced the theatre production. It 'something any ten-year old could enjoy,' (Richard O’Brien). ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ took a mere eighteen months for it to be made into a great motion picture. It is like a fairy tail ending for a struggling play, when Lou Adler and Michael White decided to invest in the musical production for 20th Century-Fox in 1973. Also in 1973 drama critics named the play ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ as ‘Best Musical’ in the London Evening Standard's annual poll. In October 1974, the filming for The Rocky Horror Show, at Bray Studios, England.
**Plot** It is a film is about ‘two apple pie’, ideal All-American ‘kids’ who are on their way to visit and old college professor. During a rainstorm, their car develops a flat tyre. Seeing a mansion in the distance with lights on, they decided to venture out in the storm. They are unaware of the impending danger that they are about to face. The mansion is much like that described in many Frankenstein stories. The lights are inciting yet also sinister; the cool lighting heightens the dark and shadowy shapes.
Dr. Frank N Furter, a transvestite from the planet Transexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, is in the midst of one of his insane and maniacal experiments. Dr. Frank N Furter is trying to created the perfect man, ‘He-man’, Rocky Horror. Dr. Frank N Furter intends to put Rocky Horror to good use, for himself, in his kinky household retinue, presided over by a hunchback henchman named Riff Raff and his incestuous sister Magenta, whilst also being aided by a tap dancing groupie-in-residence.
The ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is a comment about the moral attributes of society during the 1960’s and 70’s (or lack of them!). It highlights the dilemmas that teenager were experiencing. The moral imagery is played in the character of Dr. Frank N Furter. This is highlighted when subversion of sexual morals of Brad and Janet, are broken down from their normality, due to peer pressure within the house. ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ is a story of sexual confusion and experimentation.
I will not spoil the story any further.
**Cast** Dr. Frank N Furter played by Tim Curry Brad Majors played by Barry Bostwick Fiancée Janet Weiss played by Susan Sarandon The Un-wed Biker Eddie played by Meatloaf Riff Raff the Butler played by Richard O'Brien Riff Raff’s incestuous sister Magenta played by Patricia Quinn Rocky Horror played by Peter Hinwood
The bizarre plot and excellent sound-track make ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ a unique film to experience and watch over and over again. My favourite song from the film is Time Warp. I love the actions and join in whenever I hear this song. (If you see a mad woman jigging around to Time Warp you now know who it is!) This film is not for everyone, but it is an experience to watch, if only the once, as long as you are over eighteen years old!
