If you have not seen this film yet, you have not lived, and I command you to see it at once!!! The best way is still to go to the cinema or to the stage production, but a close second is this DVD release. I am talking about the 25th Anniversary double dvd boxset.
You can find opinions of the film elsewhere on Ciao, suffice to say it is the strangest thing you will ever watch, but I think there is something in it to appeal to everyone. The story of the young couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) breaking down in the country and coming upon ‘a hunting house for rich weirdos’, is one many Ciao readers will be familiar with I am sure!!!
Once in the house, on the premise of using a phone, they try to avoid being ‘changed’ by the strangeness contained within; including Dr Frank N Furter (Tim Curry), Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien – also the writer) and many other strange yet intriguing characters. This Boxset is a tribute to the twisted cult horror/sci-fi/musical/b movie that is Rocky Horror.
The first disk contains two versions of the film, a UK version and an edited US version with one of the cut songs spliced back in and a few other small changes. You also get a lot of strange extras like audience participator prompts (telling you when to squirt your water pistol and to snap your rubber gloves!!!), a theatrical experience showing audience reactions to the film at certain points throughout it (this one is weird), extra bits of information from the producer and director thoughout, dvd rom games, trivia questions, and a few other bits.
The second disk is where all the REAL extra material is hidden, and this will keep you amused for months (I still haven’t got through it all yet and I have had it 3 months!). Where to start, there is a documentary about Rocky Horror, including interviews with Jim Sharman, Richard O’Brien, Susan Sarandon, and most of the rest – highlighting the fall and rise (yes in that order) of Rocky. Theatrical Trailers x 2, a misprint ending (where the sound has not been dubbed correctly), photo gallery, 2 deleted music scenes (1 good – 1 really corny, glad they deleted that hehe), about 20 outtakes, an alternate credit ending and 2 karaoke sing along tracks (sweet transvestite and toucha toucha touch me).
There is also a pop-up video of Hot Patootie (Meatloaf) and interviews from VH1s Where are they now – with all the main cast members – except strangely – Tim Curry!!! PLUS (but wait there is still more) some more DVD ROM (for PC) features.
This pack retails in high street for £24.99, but I would refer you to my favourite online store for DVDs – Play247 (see my other opinion) – where it is £17.99. Alternatively, if you have a multi-region player and are willing to wait longer – it is only £13 from DVDBoxOffice.com (based in Canada) and this includes postage!!!!
I hope everyone who reads this buys the DVD, if you need more convincing, just ask!!!!! Don’t dream it……… beeeeeeee it!
Thanks for reading
