Hmmmmmm - I still remember watching this oddball movie for the first time, and I must confess that I just didn’t get it. I did get the inkling that there was something going on that I couldn’t quite put my finger on. So I watched it again, and thought it was very amusing. Then again, and then it hit me. This film is a masterpiece. How it evaded me for so long I’ll never now. Perhaps with it being a musical I was distracted by thoughts of Julie Andrews charging around the Alps screeching like some kind of demented harridan.
At any rate, if you haven’t seen this film, you ought to. It manages to be side-splittingly funny the whole time, and is a visual and musical treat. The costumes and sets are fantastic, from the brooding gothic arena of the castle, to the sparse, minimalist sci-fi style of the lab. The whole thing is wonderful to watch, even if the special effects do now look dated. In fact, I think this improves the whole thing by increasing the incredible campness of the whole thing to new and dizzying heights.
The music too is absolutely excellent, traditional fayre in some ways for musicals, but with a slight edginess, a twist of the bizarre and disturbing which keeps the film from being like any other musical. The debauched Time Warp is easily the best song in the film, with its raucous chorus interrupted by the sober tones of Charles Gray as the narrator from time to time. Wonderful, and very catchy.
The actors are marvellous, and all of them ham it up to just the right level of kitsch. Tim Curry steal the show as the "sweet transvestite, from transsexual Transylvania" Doctor Frank - N - Furter. But Susan Sarandon, Meatloaf and Richard O’Brien as the horribly deadpan servant Riff-Raff are all fantastic.
Overall, I would advise anyone to see this camp classic - unlike most kitsch films, it’s not good because it’s now "ironic" or "so bad it’s good". It genuinely is an excellent, enjoyable film which I can watch time and time again without ever getting bored. And as for the live show - do not, EVER, pass up the chance to see this live. It really is one of the most stunning nights out you’ll ever have, especially if you’re willing to go in costume...
