It was a dark and stormy night, newly engaged virgins Brad and Janet were travelling to visit their old friend Dr Everett Scott. Their car gets a flat tyre, there is no spare, they both decide to go to an old castle up the road for help and a telephone. The door is opened by a very strange looking butler (Richard O Brien) and things then take a change to the very bizarre….
It is almost 30 years ago in 1975 when the Rocky Horror picture show first hit the big screen and last Saturday it came no 16 in a Channel 4 poll of the most sexy on screen moments. When it first came out it was voted the worst film ever in a poll so why, 30 years on is it still such a phenomina? Because it is simple, harmless transsexual fun!
The plot continues with Brad and Janet (B&J Hmmm?) arriving at the castle on a very special night, Dr Frank N Furter a transvestite from the planet transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania is conducting an experiment, to make him a man (with blonde hair and a tan) called Rocky and that night, the experiment was to reach its climax. What follows is a complete sexual farce with the main characters bed hopping and discovering some newly created libidos and some very catchy music and some great throw away lines.
The casting of the film is inspired. Tim Curry makes his big screen debut as Frank n Furter and plays it brilliantly, there are scenes that are very reminiscent of the late, great Freddy Mercury and Curry makes the transition from serious drama school Shakespearian actor to transvestite really well. Susan Sarandon plays Janet and whilst her singing would certainly not stand up to the scrutiny of pop idols Simon Cowell her main song touch a, touch a, touch a, touch me is the one that made the channel 4 poll and Rocky (Peter Hinwood who now runs an antique shop in the uk) – gets to do just that, but as Janet does spend almost the entire movie wandering around in bra and petticoat the scenes are very mild. Richard O Brien created the show and plays Riff Raff the butler, he gives the film its most well known song – go on sing along you know you want to ….. Lets do the time warp again. (A word of advise don’t do the timewarp stood next to someone wearing stilettos who is too drunk to know left from right as when they jump on your foot – it hurts!) Brad is played by Barry Bostock who was also the mayor in Spin City. Meatloaf makes an appearance and sings a song and there is even a cameo roll for Christopher Biggins.
So whilst this film is quite watchable with a couple of friends and a bottle of wine, the plot is not that strong, but the soundtrack is good, in some ways, but why is it strong enough to maintain cult status for 30 years? The cult status has come about solely as a result of the stage show, you know when Rocky Horror is in town because people walk the streets dressed in fishnet stockings and Basques with bright red lipstick on, the official website has a list of props required for the show such as rice to throw at the wedding scene and a newspaper and water pistol to recreate the storm. There is also a tradition of shouting at the screen, according to the website one of the earliest shouts was during the storm scene where a die hard fan shouted ‘buy and umbrella you cheap b**ch’ and the tradition has gone from there. As yet I have not been to an official show but we did have quite a few Rocky Horror nights at school.
The film is rated 15, but the DVD box seems to suggest it’s a borderline 12 which is probably more reasonable these days. I was watching it the other day while my kids ( aged 6&4) were playing upstairs and they were drawn to the music which is understandable but I sent them back up as I am not quite ready to take my eldest, who picks up lyrics really quickly, to school singing I’m just a sweet transvestite!
Advantages: Classic musical, fantastic extras Disadvantages: How about a box set with rice, newspaper and Scotts tissues?!
...as Frank N Furter. The crowd was wild, the dresses were phenomenal, that bloke from Corrie (the one who did those crap windows ads) was the narrator! The only trouble was... I hadn't a clue what the hell was going on!
I was lucky enough to see RHPS on TV a couple of months later (with a pre-amble from Mark Lamarr about how uncomfortable he was with the idea that thousands of men in womens underwear were sitting looking at him at that moment!) - ... ...missed in the theatre, and loved it. When I saw the 25th Anniversary DVD I had to have it - but I didnt realise what a treat I was in for!
The basic storyline - Brad and Janet, a clean cut, all american couple, get engaged and drive off to share the news with their friend and college professor, Dr Scott, in whose science exam they met. They get lost in the woods, their tyre blows out, and they are forced to find a phone... the only building for ...

Advantages: Can be watched time and again. Disadvantages: ME DANCING ALONG TO THE SONGS!
...old and yet I find the issues it creates are as relevant today as they were in the early 1970’s. It is a stereotyped science fiction movie, portrayed in a format, which is very ‘tongue in cheek’. ‘The Rocky Horror Picture Show’ combines comic humour with a classic Gothic horror story, Frankenstein: Gothic meets the twenty-second century! In a fifties sci-fi film genre.
**History**
‘The Rocky Horror Show’ ... ...(Crystal Maze) created this play, the book, music and lyrics and Michael White produced the theatre production. It 'something any ten-year old could enjoy,' (Richard O’Brien). ‘The Rocky Horror Show’ took a mere eighteen months for it to be made into a great motion picture. It is like a fairy tail ending for a struggling play, when Lou Adler and Michael White decided to invest in the musical production for 20th Century-Fox in 1973. ...

Oh Rocky Review ofThe Rocky Horror Picture Show (DVD)by

Advantages: Quotable, kitsch, funny Disadvantages: too much of a good thing can be bad for you
At the late night, double feature picture show, you might bump into a tall dark man in a basque. We’re talking about a film that has made many a rational human being shout random sections of script, just for the sheer pleasure of doing so. The musical on which the film is based opened June 1973 at the Royal Court's upstairs experimental Theatre. It took Richard O’ Brien six months to write… music and all! Janet Weiss (Susan Sarandon) ... ...School and embody Americana to the point that they’d make Britney green with envy. But, I would like if I may to take you on a strange journey, far outside the safeness of Denton. While visiting their ex tutor and friend Dr Everett Scott, the couple unfortunately have a blow out in the front left hand tyre… In the velvet darkness of the blackest night, they happen to reach a castle. A castle that holds more than a few secrets… That ...

Advantages: spoof sci-fi, monster, horror flick musical Disadvantages: It all happened 25 years ago - when I was your age!
The first time I watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a real let-down. This was in 1975, after having had my fill of The Rocky Horror Show in the King’s Road Theatre. Goodness knows, I had seen the stage show so many times and knew every nuance of every actor, from Tim Curry and Meatloaf, to Little Nell, and, of course Richard O’Brien himself.
As each actor changed (the stage show ran and ran) so did the performances. Little did ... ...We would dine at the trendy Borsch & Tears if we had time before the show, and scoff Donner Kebabs on the way home, often rubbing shoulders with the cast and crew. On the final night in the King’s Road, Richard O’Brian threw a party. Johnny Rotten wore his Suzuki Sweater inside out (ooh – the little rebel) and we all had a fine time. Stage props, including the ushers’ transparent masks, Rocky’s black knickers, suspender ...

...see it at once!!! The best way is still to go to the cinema or to the stage production, but a close second is this DVD release. I am talking about the 25th Anniversary double dvd boxset.
You can find opinions of the film elsewhere on Ciao, suffice to say it is the strangest thing you will ever watch, but I think there is something in it to appeal to everyone. The story of the young couple Brad Majors and Janet Weiss (Barry Bostwick and Susan Sarandon) ... ...am sure!!!
Once in the house, on the premise of using a phone, they try to avoid being ‘changed’ by the strangeness contained within; including Dr Frank N Furter (Tim Curry), Riff Raff (Richard O’Brien – also the writer) and many other strange yet intriguing characters. This Boxset is a tribute to the twisted cult horror/sci-fi/musical/b movie that is Rocky Horror.
The first disk contains two versions of the film, a UK version ...

Advantages: rocky horror - Very original, funny, good soundtrack. Disadvantages: Shock treatment = v poor in comparison to rocky horror. just weird.
...I watched the rockyhorrorpictureshow at a friend's house and immediately loved it! Whilst looking to buy the DVD for myself, i came across this dvd set, with rockyhorror and the added bonus of a related "sequel" to rockyhorror called Shock Treatment. I hadn't seen Shock Treatment but thought I'd like it, with it being so closely related and with a lot of the same cast.
Firstly, I must say that I loved rockyhorror. Despite it being so popular in the past, I only watched it for the first time recently and realised i had been missing out! It's a very strange storyline and downright weird at times, but in a cool way - newlyweds Brad and Janet become stranded whilst driving on their way to their honeymoon (i think that's where they were going..but it doesnt really matter if not). Anyway, to get help, they approach a castle they passed...

Advantages: MeatLoaf, the Time Warp, and as close to being at the theatre as you can be at home Disadvantages: It's Rocky, What disadvantages could there be??
...I'm a bee with a deadly sting.
You get a hit and your mind goes ping, your heart will pump and your blood will sing!
Well that wee chorus alone tells you what the RockyHorrorPictureShow will do to you.
If watching this DVD doesn't encourage you to get yourself dressed up, and head on out to the theatre to dance and sing the night away, then there's seriously something wrong with you!
I've seen the show three times and the film dozens, and still can't stop watching it over and over again, and listening to my copy of the soundtrack (which includes the Norwegian version of some of the songs - true genius in Norwegian!)
RIght that's enough of telling you why you should get this.... let's tell those who don't know already what it's about!
We start off at a wedding, of Ralph Hapschatt (Jeremy Newson) to Betty Monroe...

THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW is a magical phenomenon unlike anything ever before seen onscreen. Borrowing largely from cinema's horror conventions, the film begins as an innocent young couple is stranded at the home of a mad scientist who is building the perfect man. The castle is filled with a most bizarre group of characters who worship their master, Dr. Frank-N-Furter, played magnificently by the fabulous Tim Curry, in leather jacket, pearls, fishnet stockings, and heavy makeup. Brad (Barry Bostwick) and Janet (Susan Sarandon) are forced to examine their own sexuality as the voluptuous doctor releases the hidden desires in each of them. Based on the stage musical by Richard O'Brien (who also appears in the film as Riff Raff), the film comes alive with unforgettable song-and-dance numbers that have come to represent the sexual liberation of the 1970s. The outstanding costuming and makeup, the terrific acting by a group of relative unknowns (Curry, O'Brien, Bostwick, Sarandon, Nell Campbell, Patricia Quinn, Meat Loaf), and the memorable songs ('Time Warp', 'Sweet Tranvestite') help make THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW one of the most bizarrely entertaining and satisfying musicals ever made.
Special Features: Audio Commentary By Richard O Brien And Patricia Quinn, The Theatrical Experience, Participation Prompter, Deleted Scenes, Out Takes, Sing A Long, Documentary, Theatrical Trailers, Misprint ending, Photo Gallery
Aspect Ratio: 1.66 Wide Screen, 16:9 Wide Screen
Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1
Dubbing Sound: Dolby Digital 5.1 English
