Just imagine the scene, your walking around the lovely city of San Francisco when suddenly out of the sky, a missile come hurtling down towards you. Do you run around screaming like a little girl whose doll has been stolen, or protect yourself against the explosion somehow?

The answer is in the unmistakable words of The Rock, ‘it doesn’t matter!’ (The wrestler of course. It doesn’t matter because the rocket is full of one of the world’s deadliest poisonous gases, and all there is between you and this huge misfortune is an old prisoner and a super geek.

Don’t all start to get worried that some fanatical terrorists are going to kill you in your beds, because in talking about The Rock, (the film not the wrestler). The story is that a military super hero, but unfortunately madman has stolen a couple of dozen nasty rockets full of poisonous gas, that will make you cough your guts up, quite literally, as well as burning all your skin off. Not really a nice thing to happen I think that you will agree.

He takes them along with his bunch of crack soldier guys to the worlds most secure prison, and holds the American government to ransom. The prison in question is Alcatraz, and the only two people that the Americans can find to save the city is an old pensioner prisoner, who was arrested hundreds of years ago, and claims to be a British SAS officer, who was on a mission to steal US secrets. (Not that they have a lot because they usually sell to the highest bidder!)

The other is a chemical weapons super geek, who has never fired a gun before, and rarely spends the day outside the office. The two unlikely heroes’ are played by two of Hollywood’s finest. The undisputed father of modern film, Sean Conery, (mans man, and old bloke that women would like to go 12 rounds with, wink wink, nudge nudge, to all you people out there, and you know who you are), and Nicolas Cage being the other, who is probably one of the hottest properties in Hollywood at the moment.

Not surprisingly Connery is a bit miffed about being asked to help as he has been in jail for more that 30 years, with no trial, or chance of release. He takes a little bit of persuading, but agrees after a brilliant car chase, (great practice for cage in ‘Gone in 60 seconds’).

They go in with some navy seals, with Connery guiding, as he is the only person to have escaped from the prison, and Cage bringing up the rear. The seals get killed, and then there was two, you can guess what happens, they rescue the day, and Cage sets cannery free, as he has no chance of parole, and claims that he was killed in the bomb blast.

The film has it all, great car chase, dead, blood, and glory. Ed Harris is definitely the best person in the world to play the brilliant but mad army bloke, and Cage and Connery seem to feed off each others brilliance. In my opinion Sean Connery is probably in the top three actors of all time, as he brings a presence of believability to all of his characters, as well as his legendry style and charisma.

It’s a roller coaster of a film, which is packed with action from start to finish, and with three brilliant performances what more do I need to say?

Disadvantages: Ultimately very silly, a little derivative and of course, the logic is occasionally flawed....
