What an excellent film this is starring none other than Nicholas Cage, Sean Connery and Ed Harris.
The film has been produced by the same people who brought us Bad Boys (Martin Lawrence and Will Smith) Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. It is rated 15 and just over 2 hours long, but you will never look at the time once you start watching this film as the plot is brilliant from start to finish. There is quite alot of swearing (nearly ever other sentence) and violence but not enough to be off putting as I guess a film like this would not be the same with Do you mind going away???
General Francis X Hummel (Ed Harris) who has won several honours and medals can no longer deal with the thought of losing so many men in combat without any of them getting a proper funeral or recognition. He decides now is the time to take matter into his own hands and visits the Naval Weapons Dept where he steals 15 missiles which are loaded with VX poison gas. A very deadly weapon and kills extremely quickly as you will see when one of Hummel's men are killed in the attack by this gas.
Alcatraz is now a historic prison and in a group of visitors there are some familiar faces, next minute Hummel has taken over Alcatraz with 81 hostages. He contacts Washing D.C. and makes his demands that 100 million dollars is to be transferred to their account, of which 1 million will go to each of the families soldiers that have died in action. The Pentagon has exactly 40 hours to come up with the money or they will launch the missiles at San Fransico.
Pentagon are having trouble deciding what is the best way to overcome this situation as nobody knows the layout of the prison and the only realistic way of surprising Hummel and his men is from inside the prison.
In comes John Patrick Mason (Sean Connery) who was a SAS operative before he was caught 30 years ago and since been locked away and forgotten. He is the only person every to escape from Alcatraz but for National Security no one else ever knew about it.
Stanley Goodspeed (Nicholas Cage) works for the FBI as a chemical weapons expert and has been ordered to leave town and go to San Fransico for a very urgent assignment. Not wanting to break up the special moment (shall we say) with his pregnant catholic girlfriend he packs his bags and of he goes.
Between FBI agents and Goodspeed Mason agrees to help (thinking that he will be released afterwards) and with a bunch of Navy Seals head for The Rock.
Once inside Mason and others go through the tunnels to below the shower room where the intend to enter the prison. Little do the Seals know that one of Hummel's men has created an anti-motion trembling advice with lasers which is planted in the shower room. As the Seals enter they are detected and Hummel's men are at the ready within minutes all hell breaks out, gunfire everywhere and all the Seals are dead leaving just Goodspeed and Mason alive.
Good job Mason is ex SAS but will it be enough so save the millions of people in San Fransico from this madman Frank Hummel or will Goodspeed be calm enough to disarm the rockets before the deadline?
You will have to watch to find out.
I could not really praise this film enough other than exciting, brilliant, amazing, edge of your seat stuff, fantastic, super dooper (I could go on all day but I won't).
