This is a really great film. It has an all star cast, loads of great action and is produced by Crimson Tide team Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer. All in all its a blast.
General Hummel (Ed Harris) steals a vast amount of highly poisoness liquid-gas missiles. He then takes over Alcatraz and threatens to launch them into San Francisco unless the US government come up with the $100 million ransom. The reason he is doing this is so he can get the money to compensate the families of fallen war comrades. The only men able to stop his evil plan is ex-SAS operative and former Alcatraz resident John Mason (Sean Connery) and Biochemical expert Stanley Goodspeed (Nicolas Cage).
The acting is superb from all the cast. Ed Harris is excellent as the war hero turned military madman. He comes across as a bad guy that cares. You can tell he doesn't want to kill but will if forced into it. The strong bad guy makes Sean Connery and Nicolas Cages job easy. Connery although aging proves he still has what it takes to be an action man. He plays the calm an collected ex-con very well and he cotrasts interestingly with Cages character. Cage plays the biochemical scientist very well. His character has never been out in the action before and so portrays fear yet motivation to get the job done. The supporting cast of Michael Biehn and William Forsythe also do an outstanding job in their roles.
The action is what this film is really all about though. It doesn't disappoint. When it starts you can tell it's going to be great as the gas rockets are stolen in true Hollywood style. There is an incredible car chase that makes way for lots of incredible stunts. It is in my opinion one of the best car chases I have seen only being out done by Gone In 60 Seconds also starring Nicolas Cage. Then there are plenty of of action scenes while on "The Rock". There is an incredible shootout that a film magazine I buy rated in the top 10 shootouts of all time. The action is astounding.
Overall this film is amazing entertainment. It has a great cast, is packed from start to finish with incredible action and has a good plot. What more could you ask for. Give it a go. It is superb.

Great first ops. Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer were the best action combo. Their best other film was 'bad boys' i reckon.

Great op once again - this is another of my favourite films, Connery and Cage make an excellent double act! Oh, and quality comedy by clanman on the comment :)
Advantages: A thoroughly well-executed “Boy’s Own” movie with plenty of action.... Disadvantages: Ultimately very silly, a little derivative and of course, the logic is occasionally flawed....
